A steel cord that is suitable for reinforcing rubber articles such as tires. The inventive steel cord enables to completely eliminate the presence of cobalt in a tire when combined with the proper cobalt free compound. Advantageously the steel cord adheres equally well to rubbers containing organic cobalt salts. The inventive wire is different from prior art steel cords in that the brass coating now comprises iron particles. The iron particles have a size between 10 nm and 10 000 nm. The presence of iron mitigates the adhesion retention loss of the rubber to steel cord bond in a hot and humid environment. It is a further advantage that the inventive steel cord does not contain any intentionally added cobalt thereby contributing to the elimination of harmful substances in the production area as well as the environment.

A spool for winding metal wire is presented that is provided with a storage section. A metal wire spool generally comprises a core to which a first and second flange are attached at the distal ends of the core. By introducing a third flange, in the vicinity of the first flange a stock section is formed. The third flange can be situated outside of the first and second flange or in between the first and second flange. The stock section is the small gap that is provided between the first and third flange. In order to withhold cut wire ends, the stock section is provided with resilient retainers, that must keep the wire end in place to prevent that the wire end would protrude out of the spools. The third flange is provided with radial slots to easily changeover the wire from the storage section to workspace and possibly back. In the field of coating metal wires, notably the field of coating steel wires and more in particular in the production of bead wires that are steel wires coated with a resin it is important that the resin is applied in a uniform way both over the circumference and the length of the wire. The inventors therefore come up with an apparatus that comprises an applicator for applying an resin solution and a wiping section, wherein the distance between these two can be adjusted as well as the length of the wiping section. The applicator applies a surplus of resin solution, while the wiping section calibrates this to the desired amount in order to obtain the final amount of dried resin on the wire. Both applicator and wiping section are contained in an encasement with provisions to recuperate evaporated solvent thereby reducing harmful emissions. In the associated method the resin to solvent ratio is used to steer to the final amount.
