Abrégé

A holder (12) for checking non-compliance of a blister package has a pocket (60) into which the blister package is inserted. The front of the pocket is a transparent plate (128). Rectangular openings of wells (133) in the front face of the box (121) are positioned behind the blisters of the blister package. Each well contains light-sensitive elements (134). Non-compliance occurs when a blister of a used blister package is in an unopened condition. The sensing elements (134) detect this by ambient light in the pocket not reaching the elements. An electrical circuit in the box (121) monitors the elements (134) and provides a signal indicating a non-compliance condition if a blister in the returned package is unopened. Information identifying the unopened blister is stored in the circuit. A variable light source can be provided.

Abrégé

A protected blister package assembled by a pharmacist for a patient has the correctness of its assembly confirmed by checking the correct correlation of three binary codes respectively appearing on three components of the package. The first component comprises a blister sheet loaded with the prescribed medication doses; the second component comprises a backing sheet sealing the medication doses in the cavities of the package blisters; and the third component comprises a protective card to be folded around the blister package after it has been attached to the card. Prior to assembly of the blister package two of the binary codes are printed on the backing sheet and the third binary code is printed on the card. During assembly of the package a portion of the backing sheet bearing one of its two codes is transferred to a predetermined position on the blister sheet. After assembly of the protected blister package the three binary codes are scanned to confirm that the package has been correctly assembled.

Abrégé

A holder (12) for checking non-compliance of a blister package, has a pocket (60) into which the blister package is inserted for carrying out the check. The holder comprises a shallow box (121) with its front face providing the back of the pocket (60). The front of the pocket is provided by a transparent plate (128) spaced from the box and supported by transparent side walls (122,123). The side walls are formed with opposed channels (124) which engage respective marginal edges of a blister package when it is slid downwards to a predetermined position inside the pocket (60). An array of rectangular openings or wells (133) are formed in the front face of the box (121) and are positioned to respectively locate behind the blisters of the blister package when at the predetermined position. Each well contains eight light-sensitive elements (134). Non-compliance occurs when one of the blisters of a used blister package returned by the patient is still in an unopened condition. The sensing elements (134) detect this by ambient light in the pocket not reaching the elements (134) as it is blocked off by an intact region of a friable foil backing strip provided on the blister package. An electrical circuit in the box (121) monitors the elements (134) and provides an output signal indicating that a non- compliance condition exists if a particular blister in the returned package is unopened. Information identifying the position of the unopened blister and the time at which the check occurred is stored in the circuit so that it can be accessed by interrogating the holder. If the ambient illumination is found to be inadequate to produce a clear distinction between compliance and non-compliance, a variable light source (not shown) can be provided to transmit supplementary light into the interior of the pocket by way of the transparent side walls (122,123) and plate (128).

Abrégé

A protected blister package (50) assembled by a pharmacist for a patient has the correctness of its assembly confirmed by checking the correct correlation of three binary codes (17) respectively appearing on three components of the package. The codes are intended to provide information relating to the identity of the patient and the nature and quantity of prescribed medication doses in the blisters of the package. The first component comprises a blister sheet (58) loaded with the prescribed medication doses; the second component comprises a backing sheet (57) sealing the medication doses in the cavities of the package blisters; and the third component comprises a protective card (51) having fold lines (52,53 and 54) enabling it to be folded around the blister package (50) after it has been attached to the card. Prior to assembly of the blister package two of the binary codes (17) are printed on the backing sheet (57) and the third binary code is printed on the card. The three codes are printed at the same time to ensure that they are identical. During assembly of the package a portion of the backing sheet bearing one of its two codes is transferred to a predetermined position on the blister sheet. Correct horizontal positioning of the blister package (50) in the card achieved by lining up the left hand edge of the package with the fold line (52) and correct vertical positioning of the package is achieved by lining up the set of blocks (56) on the package with the set of blocks (55) on the protective card (51) After assembly of the protected blister package the three binary codes (17) are scanned to check that they are identical. If identity of the three codes is confirmed the package has been correctly assembled.

Abrégé

A holder (1) for storing a blister package between times of use, has a flat panel (2) in which re embedded an array of light sensors (3). Coplanar channels (8) bordering the panel (8) enable a blister package to be inserted into the channels (8) until it occupies a predetermined position at which one marginal edge engages with, and closes, a pair of switches (12). A pair of easily-disconnectable straps (13) hold the package in the predetermined position between times of use. When at the predetermined position, the regions of a friable backing strip forming part of the package lies opposite respective sensors (3). Each sensor incorporates a light transmitter which, when energized, directs a beam of light against the region of the foil closing the associated blister. The reflectivity characteristic of the region is greater when the foil is intact than when the foil is ruptured by the ejection through it of the contents of the associated blister. This characteristic of the foil can be monitored and used to determine when the associated blister has been opened. Electrical circuitry is used to record the time at which opening occurred and this can be compared with a record of the times at which a blisters should have been opened in order to comply with the requirements of a medical prescription.

An apparatus for reducing human error in loading prescribed medications automatically into blisters (18) of a blister sheet. The operator is provided with a manually-operated controller (15) with which the amount and nature of a particular medication dose can be selected. The operator uses the controller (15) to select the required dosage from a chosen container (13). Each container (13) has a first bar code (14) identifying the nature of the doses it contains. A second bar code is pre-printed on a header sheet (4) which is destined to be attached to the blister sheet after its blisters have been loaded. The second bar code contains information identifying the patient and the contents of the various blisters. A comparator (12) responds to a lack of coincidence between the first and second barcode, by flashing the screen to indicate to the operator that an error has been made.

Abrégé

Apparatus for detecting non-compliance patterns on a series of used blister sheets previously returned by the same patient, reads a code (2) on each blister sheet (1) providing, inter alia, information relating to the position of each blister on the blister sheet. This information is passed by the code reader (4) through a key (15) to an image (5) of the blister sheet appearing on one-half (14) of a split screen (6). The screen (14) displays a picture of a blister sheet with its blister positions marked by dots or rings (8). By means of the key (15), which may take the form of a joystick, an image of a disc (9) can be placed over each of the blister positions where an unopened blisters occurs. The image of the blister sheet together with the discs is then transferred by operation of a key (10) to the second half (11) of the split screen (6) screen where it is superimposed on a slightly offset stack (13) of used blister sheets previously returned by the same patient. The positions of the discs (9) are compared by the apparatus with corresponding positions on previously returned blister sheets and, if a coincidence is detected, the apparatus produces a change in the appearance of the corresponding disc on the blister sheet on the top of the stack. A change in a disc appearance suggests that there may be a pattern of non-compliance that can then be investigated further.

Abrégé

An assembled blister package (1) has a blister sheet (11) formed with blisters (2) sealed by a foil backing sheet (4). The blister package (1) is sandwiched between opposite sides of a folded card (not shown) to stiffen it. Each of these sides has a rectilinear array of windows, the blisters protruding through one array of windows and the other array of windows defining discrete areas on which print describing the contents of the blisters beneath, is to be applied. A header sheet on which a bar-code is printed is attached to the backing sheet and a reader (23) is positioned to read the bar-code and extract from it information such as a description of the contents of each of the blisters and their respective positions in the package. Information relating to the identification of the contents of a particular blister and the identity of the patient is fed to an ink-jet printer (31) and two stepping motors (22 and 30) are used to control the position of the printer with respect to the backing sheet. As the printer does not make physical contact with the backing sheet, it can be spaced from it by a sufficient distance to enable it to pass over the card without obstruction despite the card being salient with respect to the surface of the backing sheet. Printing can thus proceed quickly without obstruction by parts of the card and without having to vary the distance between the printer and the irregular surface over which it passes. This has the advantage that no precise alignment of the backing sheet with the blister sheet is necessary during assembly of the blister package, and problems associated with securing the backing sheet to the blister sheet are avoided. As the printing information is read from the bar code on the header sheet which is attached to the blister package, there is a direct correlation between the written description of the blister contents on discrete areas of the backing sheet and the patient identity information read from the header card as both are determined by the same bar code.

Abrégé

A blister sheet (1) has a generally rectangular blister (2) formed with one pair of longer side walls (7) having parallel steps (8) and a second pair of shorter side wall (9) devoid of steps. The side walls serve to space a front face (5) of the blister from the plane of a rupturable foil backing sheet (4) which retains medication doses (nor shown) inside the blister until they are to be taken. The medication doses are ejected from the cavity of the blister (2) by depressing its front face with finger pressure so that they are forced against the backing sheet (4) with sufficient force to rupture it. During the application of finger pressure to the front face (5) it bows downwardly in its central region as indicated by the broken outline. Simultaneously the end walls (9) tilt inwardly towards one another so that any medication doses lying against them are forced into the central region of the blister from which they can be ejected more easily by the descending front face (5).

Apparatus (14) for loading two blister sheets (10 and 11) with the same prescribed medication doses in the same blister cavities, has a support table (9) provided with parallel lines of apertures in its upper face for receiving respective blisters of two blister sheets arranged side-by-side in the same horizontal plane. A circular array of containers (5) can be indexed around its vertical axis to bring a selected container to a discharge position (7). A mechanism (12) operates to move the support table (9) horizontally about perpendicular axes so that a chosen blister cavity can be located beneath the discharge position (7). A doctor's prescription (1) is converted by an encoder (2) into a binary code (3) read by a code reader (4) forming part of the apparatus (14). A computer (8) controls the apparatus so that the required medication doses prescribed by a doctor are loaded into the cavities of corresponding blisters of the two blister sheets. The speed of loading two blister sheets which are to be identical, can thereby be reduced.

Abrégé

A stiff rectangular card (1) has four parallel fold lines (2) which divide the card into a narrow central panel (5) disposed between two pairs of wider panels (3,4 and 6,7). The panels of both pairs are each formed with an array of oblong openings (11). One panel (3 and 7) of each pair has one face covered by an adhering thin backing foil (12 and 13). The exposed face of the foil is covered by a layer of pressure-sensitive adhesive (14) having a pattern such that it does not cover the oblong areas of the foil which register with the openings (11). A thin flexible cover slip (15) covers the layer (14) and can be peeled off immediately prior to the associated panel (3 and 7) being folded over and pressed against the neighboring panel (4 and 6). Each of these neighboring panels (4 and 6) supports a blister sheet having its blisters protruding through respective openings (11) and their cavities, loaded with prescribed medication doses, are sealed by the foil on folded-over panel (4 and 6). The fold lines (2) enable the two pairs of panels to be folded together to provide a compact disposable blister package. Finger pressure applied to a blister forces the doses within it against the portion of the foil covering the openings (11) so that the foil ruptures to enable the doses to be dislodged from the cavity of the blister.

A holder (100) for storing prescribed medication doses in a sealed cup (112) is provided with a sealing strip (117) a first portion (110) of which covers the mouth of the cup and a second portion (120) carries a picture of the face of the patient for whom the medication has been prescribed. The holder (100) is provided with a rim (113) extending outwardly from the mouth of the cup and with an extension flange (114) having a flat upper surface (111) which is coplanar with the upper surface of the rim (113). The sealing strip adheres to the coplanar surfaces of the rim (113) and the flange (114) and is provided with lines of severance (130 and 131) extending from a pull-tab (151) and along opposite sides of the cup. These lines of severance (130 and 131) are arranged within the confines of the path of the seal between the sealing strip (117) and the rim (113) so that air cannot leak through the lines of severance and into the cup when storing medication doses within the holder. The pull-tab enables the first portion (110) of the sealing strip (117) to be peeled back from covering the cup so that its contents can be accessed by inverting the cup over the palm of the hand of the user.

Abrégé

Apparatus for loading medication doses (4') into a cavity (15') of a blister sheet (12') made from a resilient plastics material, is provided with a number of horizontally- arranged containers one of which is shown at (6'). Each container can be operated to release a solid medication dose (4') into a cavity (15') of a selected blister. The blister sheet to have its cavities loaded with medication doses is supported horizontally on a table spaced beneath the level at which the containers (6') are located. A thick horizontal plate (1) is disposed between the level of the containers and the level of the table, and an array of inclined and axially-parallel bores (2') are formed through the plate. The upper ends of the bore associated with each blister cavity can be located beneath the container which is to deliver a dose to the cavity so that a released dose travels down the bore and impacts against one side of the bore which acts to deflect the dose and thus reduce its vertical momentum. The dose is released from the lower end of the bore and impacts against the inside upper, wall of the cavity. The risk of damage by impact of released doses with one another in the cavity is reduced and the risk of a dose bouncing back out of the cavity through impacting on its resilient floor is avoided.

Abrégé

A dispenser is provided with a casing (7) containing a number of components one of which is a printer (2) into which a pharmacist can insert from a keyboard (1) information relevant to a particular patient. The information relates to the patient's identity and to medication doses which are to be administered to the patient at particular times on particular days as prescribed by a doctor. A holder (3) for blank header cards is contained in the casing (7) and enables the printer (2) to produce a header card (4) containing all of the above information in the form of a bar code (6). The dispenser loads cavities of a blister sheet with the prescribed medication doses and when loading is completed the blister sheet with the loaded but open cavities is transferred to a sealer (12). The printed header card (4) is lo transferred to the sealer (12) and when the medication doses in the blister sheet have been checked for correctness the header card is attached to the blister sheet to complete the assembly of a sealed and loaded blister sheet with the header card (4) attached. The blister package, so-formed, can then be released by the dispenser. The advantage of the dispenser is that the pharmacist cannot intervene in the assembly of the blister package so that the risk of human error during the assembly is diminished or avoided altogether.

Abrégé

A moulded unit provides two frusto-conical cups (1 and 2 ) shaped to be fitted together so that a tablet to be crushed can be placed between their circular bases (10). The rims (3) of the cups are connected to one another by a flexible strip member (4). When the two cups are displaced laterally from one another, as shown, one of the cups is inverted with respect to the other cup. This facilitates usage of the cups and ensures that they can be compactly stacked for transportation. Unobstructed fitting together of the two cups of the unit may be assisted by the positioning of a transverse hinging axis (7) or a line of weakness on the member so that the point on the member about which it is most easily flexed, is nearer one cup than the other cup. Scalloping (9) of the sidewalls of the cups may also be used to enable one cup to be inserted more easily into the other cup.

Abrégé

A coplanar panel (6) for stiffening a blister sheet (20) provides a rectilinear array of rectangular windows (21) for the reception of respective blisters, rows of horizontal and parallel continuous strips (8) separating the longer sides of the blisters, and transverse lines of interrupted strips (9) which serve to separate the shorter sides of respective blisters. The interruptions provide gaps (10) for accommodating a pair of parallel ducts (22) formed on the blister sheet and which permit air to pass between neighboring blisters when one of them is manually depressed. The panel is held in place on the blister sheet by an adhesive layer which secures the coplanar lands of the blister sheet to the contiguous surfaces of the panel. A peel-off cover slip normally covers the adhesive layer and cuts (10) extending through the thickness of the panel but not the cover slip, serve to frame the portions of the panel which are not required when the panel is to be used. These portions remain adhering to the cover slip when it is peeled off the panel.

Abrégé

These lines of severance (130 and 131) are arranged within the confines of the path of the seal between the sealing strip (117) and the rim (113) so that air cannot leak through the lines of severance and into the cup when 15storing medication doses within the holder. The pull-tab enables the first portion (110) of the sealing strip (117) to be peeled back from covering the cup so that its contents can be accessed by inverting the cup over the palm of the hand of the user.

Abrégé

A protected blister package assembled by a pharmacist has the assembly
correctness confirmed by
checking the correct correlation of three binary codes respectively appearing
on three components
of the package. The first component comprises a blister sheet loaded with the
prescribed
medication doses; the second comprises a backing sheet sealing the medication
in cavities of the
package blisters; and the third comprises a protective card to be folded
around the blister package
after it has been attached to the card. Prior to assembly of the blister
package two of the binary
codes are printed on the backing sheet and the third binary code is printed on
the card. During
assembly of the package a portion of the backing sheet bearing one of its two
codes is transferred
to a predetermined position on the blister sheet. After assembly, the three
binary codes are scanned
to confirm correct assembly of the package.

A coplanar panel (6) for stiffening a blister sheet (20) provides a
rectilinear array of rectangular windows (21) for
the reception of respective blisters, rows of horizontal and parallel
continuous strips (8) separating the longer sides of the blisters,
and transverse lines of interrupted strips (9) which serve to separate the
shorter sides of respective blisters. The interruptions provide
gaps (10) for accommodating a pair of parallel ducts (22) formed on the
blister sheet and which permit air to pass between
neighboring blisters when one of them is manually depressed. The panel is held
in place on the blister sheet by an adhesive layer
which secures the coplanar lands of the blister sheet to the contiguous
surfaces of the panel. A peel-off cover slip normally covers
the adhesive layer and cuts (10) extending through the thickness of the panel
but not the cover slip, serve to frame the portions of
the panel which are not required when the panel is to be used. These portions
remain adhering to the cover slip when it is peeled
off the panel.

A blister sheet (1) has a generally rectangular blister (2) formed with one
pair of longer side walls (7) having parallel
steps (8) and a second pair of shorter side wall (9) devoid of steps. The side
walls serve to space a front face (5) of the blister
from the plane of a rupturable foil backing sheet (4) which retains medication
doses (nor shown) inside the blister until they are to
be taken. The medication doses are ejected from the cavity of the blister (2)
by depressing its front face with finger pressure so
that they are forced against the backing sheet (4) with sufficient force to
rupture it. During the application of finger pressure to the
front face (5) it bows downwardly in its central region as indicated by the
broken outline. Simultaneously the end walls (9) tilt in-
wardly towards one another so that any medication doses lying against them are
forced into the central region of the blister from
which they can be ejected more easily by the descending front face (5).

Abrégé
