A system for measurement and analysis of mooring line conditions has a mooring line link with a single piece main body, the main body having multiple cavities. The cavities may be machined cavities. The cavities may contain a strain sensor element, a pressure sensor, an electronics assembly, and a battery assembly providing electric power to the electronics assembly. A cover over the cavities seals the cavities from water intrusion, and has an access port for electrical connection and data transfer.

A release mechanism for a tether assembly. A circular base ring has a central opening sized to accept a connecting member, and a plurality of radial slots. Dogs are disposed in the radial slots, and movable radially inwardly and outwardly. A cam ring having angled slots is operatively connected to the base ring, with upturned ends on the dogs engaged in the angled slots. Relative rotation between the cam ring and the base ring, by hydraulic cylinders connecting the two rings, moves the dogs radially inwardly and outwardly. In their radially inward position the dogs engage a circumferential groove in an elongated connecting member, thereby connecting the tether assembly.
Some embodiments provide ocean rig releases apparatus, systems and methods. In some implementations, a rig release apparatus comprises: a body having a first and second mating sections each being connected to one of two separate tethers; at least one locking shoe movably secured with the first mating section and movable between a first position configured to secure the first mating section and the second mating section together and a second position configured to allow the first mating section and the second mating section to separate; and a locking system configured to releasably lock the first and second mating sections and prevent hydrostatic pressure created by ocean depths from inadvertently unlocking, wherein the locking system comprises: a restraint system that inhibits the movement of the at least one locking shoe, and comprises a stop element that when released physically retracts to unlock the locking system allowing.
Some embodiments provide release apparatuses comprising: a body having first and second mating sections each connected to separate tethers; locking shoes each movable between a first position configured to lock the first and second mating sections together and a second position configured to allow the first and second mating sections to disconnect; an actuator configured to move the locking shoes between the first and second positions; wherein each of the locking shoes comprises a locking surface configured to contact an engagement surface of the second mating section and maintain a position of the first mating section with the second mating section; wherein portions of the locking surface comprise toric geometries that are not in contact with the engagement surface when the locking shoes are in the first position and do not come into contact with the engagement surface as the locking shoes transition to the second position.

Some embodiments provide methods of manufacturing a release mechanism, comprising: carburizing a plurality of locking shoes configured to be positioned within a release mechanism intended for use in temperatures that are below 5° C. and cooperatively implemented to withstand forces of at least several hundred thousand pounds, wherein the carburizing comprises exposing the plurality of locking shoes to a carbon-bearing atmosphere and heat treating the plurality of locking shoes while exposed to the carbon-bearing atmosphere; austenitizing the plurality of locking shoes at a temperature of greater than 1400° F. following the carburizing; performing a first tempering the plurality of locking shoes at a first tempering temperature; performing a second tempering of the plurality of locking shoes at a second tempering temperature that is different than the first tempering temperature; and flame hardening one or more surfaces of each of the plurality of locking shoes.
Some embodiments provide release apparatuses comprising: a body comprising a first mating section and a second mating section connected to first and second tethers; and a plurality of movable locking shoes secured with the first mating section and movable between a first position configured to lock the first mating section and the second mating section together and a second position configured to allow the first mating section and the second mating section to disconnect; wherein each of the plurality of locking shoes comprises a locking surface configured to contact an engagement surface of the second mating section and maintain a position of the first mating section with the second mating section when the plurality of locking shoes are in the first position, and wherein the locking surface of each of the plurality of locking shoes is formed at a contact angle between about 18 degrees and 24 degrees.
Apparatus for detecting the presence of a targeted group of hydrocarbons, such as diesel/fuel oil, lube oil, motor oil, hydraulic oil, jet fuel, mineral oil and crude oil in a highly reliable manner even though present at only extremely low concentration. A high power, pulsed light source is focused into a collimated beam that is reduced by a set of filters to a band of pulsed light within a precise set of wavelengths and directed vertically onto a target surface, such as a body of water. All but a precise band of light wavelengths returning to the apparatus are blocked so that substantially all light which then reaches an internal photodetector is within such precise band of wavelengths; as a result receipt of such light programmed intervals following such pulses is indicative of the presence of a member of the targeted hydrocarbon group.
