A drill rig may include a motor connected to a piston-diaphragm pump configured to: apply a force to a fluid in a cylinder of the piston-diaphragm pump by moving a piston in the cylinder, the fluid filling a void inside the cylinder between a head of the piston and one side of a diaphragm; transfer the force from the fluid across the diaphragm to a drilling mud by flexing the diaphragm, where the drilling mud is separated from the first fluid; and cause a flowrate of the drilling mud through a value connected to the cylinder via a high-pressure piping system into the borehole. The drill rig may direct the mud through a kelly and a pipe to a bottom of the wellbore, force the mud through nozzles located near a bit, rotate the bit, and returning the mud through an annulus to the surface.

While regulating the top drive during drilling operations, if an unwind is commanded within the control system the following steps may be taken: the top drive may be stopped in speed mode. Once stopped, the control system may be placed into torque mode with a zero-torque reference. The sign of the torque feedback may then be used to determine the direction to configure the speed limit control. A positive torque feedback may indicate that to release torque the top drive may rotate in a reverse direction thus the speed limit may be applied in a reverse rotation direction. A negative torque feedback may indicate that to release torque the top drive may rotate in a forward direction thus the speed limit may be applied to the forward rotation direction. Once the torque and speed fall below threshold values, the control system may raise a flag indicating that the unwind has completed.
A tubular handling apparatus includes a plurality of pipe beams defining a pipe rack, a plurality of tiering arms, each having a first recess, and a plurality of lifting arms. Each lifting arm corresponds to one of the plurality of tiering arms and each lifting arm includes a second recess proximate a first end of each of the lifting arms. Each second recess is aligned with a first recess of a corresponding tiering arm. The plurality of lifting arms are actuatable between a raised position and a lowered position relative to the plurality of tiering arms. A top surface of each of the plurality of pipe beams includes a slope extending downward towards the plurality of tiering arms. As the lifting arms raise, the tubular is lifted from the tiering arms and rolls along the top edge of the lifting arms until the tubular engages with the second recess.
A system and method for stall recovery of mud motors may be implemented in a steering control system. The stall recovery system and method may involve automatic detection of a stall of a mud motor during drilling controlled by the steering control system, and may respond to the stall in a rapid and controlled manner to avoid or minimize damage to the mud motor, such as by immediately reducing mud pressure and stopping rotary drilling, if used, faster than a typical human operator could perform. The stall recovery system and method may further take actions to automatically restart drilling.
