The present invention relates to a new type of central column for composite self-baking electrodes in submerged electric arc furnaces. According to the invention, a metallic center or column is used as a central support element, compared to conventional graphite cores, and the column is preferably made from a hypereutectic alloy of aluminum-silicon or iron, said center being generally star-shaped. The central column can be a one-piece body with a hollow center, or it can be formed by a central hollow tube separate from the plurality of radially projecting fins attached to one another, said central hollow being filled with a precursor of silicon carbide.
