Abrégé

The present invention provides a natural product-derived substance having an anti-inflammatory effect. It was found that a composition extracted from watermelon staminate flowers has the ability to suppress production of nitric oxide by macrophages, leading to the conception of an anti-inflammatory composition extracted from watermelon staminate flowers according to the present invention. An anti-inflammatory composition extracted from watermelon staminate flowers according to the present invention was confirmed to reduce the concentration of nitric oxide in cells in a concentration-dependent manner, and is expected to be suitably used in therapeutic agents against sepsis and autoimmune diseases. In addition, the anti-inflammatory composition is considered to have few side effects because of being derived from watermelon. Further, the anti-inflammatory composition can be expected to serve as an alleviation agent for some autoimmune diseases since the anti-inflammatory composition is considered to suppress iNOS induction and TNF-α production by inhibiting the activation of NF-κB.

Abrégé

It is known that phytol contained in watermelon sprouts has a cancer cell growth inhibiting effect. However, there is a problem that the amount to be ingested for exerting a cancer cell growth inhibiting effect is large. A cancer cell growth inhibiting composition containing at least one component selected from a compound having a structure represented by formula (123) and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof as an active ingredient has a higher cancer cell growth inhibiting effect and a lower normal cell growth inhibiting effect than those of phytol and therefore can be used as an anticancer agent having excellent selectivity to cancer cells. R represents a C1-C3 alkyl group.

Abrégé

A so-called molecular-targeted drug acting on a signal transduction pathway in a cell has been developed. However, a side effect of the molecular-targeted drug is not negligible for a patient. Thus, there has been a demand for a substance that exhibits a significant growth inhibitory effect on a cancer cell with fewer side effects as a health food and a pharmaceutical composition. It has been found that a hexane extract fraction of a watermelon sprout has an effect of specifically inhibiting the cell growth of the cancer cell and such an effect is primarily caused by phytol and lutein. A processed food and pharmaceutical composition having these substances as main components can exert an anticancer action without causing side effects.

Abrégé

Drugs called molecularly targeted agents are being developed which act on signal transmission pathways in cells. However, the side effects cannot be said to be a low burden on patients. Accordingly, there is still demand for substances which exhibit a significant cancer cell growth-inhibiting effect, and few side effects, as health foods and pharmaceutical compositions. The hexane extraction fraction of watermelon sprouts has an effect of specifically inhibiting cancer cell growth. The main causes of this effect are understood to be phytol and lutein. Accordingly, a processed food and a pharmaceutical composition which have these as main ingredients can provide anticancer action with no side effects.
