When the driver is not seated on the saddle, resistance disables disengagement of switchover operation between a ratchet claw (13b) for stopping lifting and a ratchet gear (14). When the driver is seated on the saddle, the urging force of the stroke spring (10) is cancelled by a load acting on the saddle, reducing the resistance, and this allows the engagement between the ratchet claw (13b) for stopping lifting and the ratchet gear (14) to be released by the switchover operation.

A bicycle transmission of an internally mounted type, the transmission having a simple structure and capable of being universally installed on various bicycles. A rotating claw body (1) is fitted on a main shaft (51). Main gears (2, 3, 4, 5) corresponding to the number of shifts are arranged side by side on the outer periphery of the rotating claw body (1). An auxiliary shaft (6) is placed in parallel with the main shaft, and auxiliary gears (7, 8, 9, 10) individually functioning in operative association with the main gears at a predetermined speed ratio are co-rotatably supported by the auxiliary shaft (6). Ratchet claws (15, 16, 17, 18) individually corresponding to the main gears are arranged on the rotating claw body (1). Ratchet teeth (19) with which the ratchet claws engage are formed on the inner peripheral side of the main gears. When a switchover member (20) for causing the ratchet claws to project from and retract into the outer peripheral surface of the rotating claw body (1) is operated, a ratchet claw (15, 16, 17, 18) is engaged with and disengaged from the ratchet teeth (19) to switchover between the main gears (2, 3, 4, 5) that transmit drive power via auxiliary gears (7, 8, 9, 10). In this way, the speed ratio of rotation of the input side and output side is changed to shift gears.
