In the production of motor vehicle markings (10), an individual series of digits is stamped into a blank (11). A stamping tool (13) is used for stamping each digit. Number plates (10), in particular vehicle number plates, are usually provided by means of a paint or a thermally applied film with individual lettering (16) which contrasts with the base colour of the number plate. Both methods have the disadvantage that the lettering (16) is applied on the surface of the number plate (10) and thus exposed to environmental influences. The invention proposes to provide the number plate (10) with at least one layer having a colorant which can be activated, with the result that the lettering (16) of the number plate (10) can be brought about by a partial activation of the colorant which can be activated. Here, the layer with the colorant which can be activated can be arranged below the surface of the number plate (10), with the result that the lettering (16) of the number plate (10) is not exposed to any environmental influences and does not fade even after several years.

The danger of manipulation or stealing exists for number plates, in particular for motor vehicles. In order to counteract the same, different possibilities for securing such number plates are known. Said possibilities are either complicated or not adequately secure. A number plate according to the invention is disclosed, in which at least one security feature (12) is arranged in the outline of a cover layer (15). The security feature (12) is thus embedded in the cover layer (15) and forms an integral part of the number plate. Such a security feature (12) can no longer be removed from the number plate. Said number plate thus offers the best possible protection against manipulation.

Motor vehicle registration plates are produced from sheet metal which usually has a thickness of approximately 1 mm. However, certain regions of the motor vehicle registration plate are overdimensioned with such a sheet metal thickness. The invention provides a motor vehicle registration plate, the wall thickness of which is reduced in areas of lower stress in order to save material. According to the invention, certain sections of a metal sheet (14) for forming a motor vehicle registration plate have a multi-layer design. The registration plate is in particular reinforced by longitudinal edge sections (21) that extend from the longitudinal edges (11). The motor vehicle registration plate has a multi-layer design, and is preferably double-layered in the longitudinal edge regions (21). To produce a motor vehicle registration plate of this type, according to the invention, narrow edge strips (19) of the sheet metal (14) are bent over along the longitudinal edges (11) of the registration plate. The motor vehicle registration plate is thus double-layered in certain sections. The plate is only trimmed, embossed or and/or punched once the edge strips (19) have been bent over.

In order to prevent motor vehicle license plates from being manipulated by mounting the same elsewhere, prior art license plates are partially or entirely destroyed when the same are dismounted from the designated vehicle. License plates (58) that are disposed on a fixture (59) are particularly difficult to secure in a simple and effective manner against theft, especially against the use thereof for identifying another vehicle. According to the invention, a protrusion (64) that engages into a breakthrough (65) in the license plate (58) is assigned to the fixture (59), and a top surface (75) of the breakthrough (66) and a breakthrough (65) edge which surrounds the breakthrough (66) in the license plate (58) are covered by a sticker (67). The sticker (67) cannot be removed from the license plate (58) and/or the protrusion (64) without being damaged. The sticker (67) thus creates a seal-type connection between the license plate (58) and the fixture (59). A sticker (67) that is damaged because the license plate (58) has been removed from the fixture (59) without authorization will be noticed if the dismounted license plate (58) is used for identifying other motor vehicles and thus make it very obvious that a stolen license plate (58) is used on another motor vehicle.
