A side guide for a smoke or fire curtain comprises:
a pair of sides defining a channel and having in-turning lips at one end defining an opening; and
at least one strip of a fire-proof material extending from at least one side and directed towards a centre of the channel, extending the length of the side and of a width to contact a curtain deployed between the sides,
wherein when the curtain is deployed in the side guide the strip contacts the curtain and forms a barrier to passage of smoke through the side guide, and
wherein the strip is arranged such that on contact with the curtain at least a portion of the strip is directed away from the opening and the strip does not pass through the lips.

The curtain is provided with additional strips (30) of fabric, to allow ease of roll up onto the roller. The strip(s) arc attached at their top end only, to the curtain. Typically this will be by sewing (32), but also may be rivets or other form of heat resistant connection. The strip(s) are also connected to the bottom bar. A cable (34) is attached to the strip(s), usually through a rivet, but any other form of secure attachment may be used. The cable is then connected to the bottom bar, via a spring (36). This connects to keep the strip(s) in tension, to enable ease of rolling of the curtain.

The present invention relates to a smoke or fire barrier for closing an opening in a building, the barrier including :- • a curtain for closing the opening; • means arrangeable at a head of the opening for deploying the curtain and for retracting the curtain; • guide means at sides of the opening for retaining edges of the curtain after deployment and for reducing flow of smoke past the edges of the curtain, the guide means including: • a pair of jaws for holding the edges of the deployed curtain, at least one of the jaws being movable towards the other and • means for moving the or each movable jaw after deployment of the curtain.
According to the invention there is provided a smoke or fire barrier for closing an opening in a building, the barrier including: • a roller, having a central longitudinal axis, from which a curtain can be unwound for deployment and to which the curtain can be rewound for retraction; • a pair of end plates, arrangeable at sides of a head of the opening, for locating the roller; • a journal bearing for each end of the roller; • a respective cruciform restraint between the end plates and the journal bearings, the restraint being slidably mounted on: • the end plate for radial movement of the roller in one direction substantially orthogonal to the axis of the roller and on • the journal bearing for radial movement of the roller in another direction, substantially orthogonal to the direction of the roller and substantially orthogonal to the one direction.

The apparatus for use in the method comprising a temperature sensor and a physical means for holding the temperature sensor against the surface of the sample. The physical means being such that if the sample reacts to the heat the temperature sensor will remain in contact with the non- exposed side to allow for the temperature time relationship to be measured. Also provided is a fire or smoke curtain in which the bottom of the curtain, in deployment, is provided with additional insulation.

A barrier comprising a roller, a curtain 2, a bottom bar and a friction brake. The curtain arrangement 1 includes a curtain 2, which when not deployed is wound on a roller 4. The roller is provided within a headbox 6, in a ceiling 8. The curtain is provided with a bottom bar 10 which weighs the curtain for descent, but can also be used to close the headbox when the curtain is retracted onto the roller. Side guides 12 are also provided to contain side edges 14 of the curtain. They extend from the headbox 6 on the ceiling to the floor 18. The curtain is held in its retracted position on the roller, by a fusible link 20. An extension 22 of the roller 2 is provided extending out of the headbox 6. The fusible link 20 is provided between the outside of the headbox and the extension 22 of the roller. A peg 24 mounted on the headbox 6 holds one portion 26 of the fusible link, while the other portion 28 of the fusible link is connected to the extension. These portions are held together by a material 30 having a low melting point range typically between 57-150°C. This acts to hold the curtain on the roller under normal condition, preventing rotation of the roller within the headbox, but on sufficient temperature rise, the material 30 will melt, releasing the portions 26, 28 of the fusible link, allowing rotation of the roller and deployment of the curtain.

A fire or smoke barrier has a head box (4), a drum (6) holding a curtain (8) and a bottom bar (10) for weighing the curtain (8). A stop mechanism includes a series of stops (14) preventing the bottom bar (10) of the curtain (8) from descending. The stops (14) being connected together, and held in non-deployment position. The barrier also includes a release such that in the event of a fire the stops (14) can be withdrawn from their position by pivoting out of the way of the bottom bar either in the plane parallel to the bottom bar (10), or by rotation about their end to a position 90° to their original position.

Fire and smoke barriers are deployed automatically on detection of fire of smoke. This can result in evacuees being on the wrong side of a deployed barrier and needing to evacuate through the barrier. The barrier includes a curtain rolled on a roller in a head box, a pair of side guides and a bottom bar. At least one of the side guides being partially movable, temporarily opening the barrier to allow the escape of an evacuee. Both side guides can be movable, allowing the barrier to swing from its top. Alternatively one side guide can be hinged to a wall with the other being able to move away from its wall, the head box joining the tops of the side guides. The barrier opens like a door to allow escape of an evacuee. The door having a closure spring to ensure it returns to its closed position.
An alarm system for a smoke or fire barrier, including alarm circuits have a normally closed switch position. A control circuit connected to the alarm circuits applies a voltage to create a non-activation situation or remove a voltage to create an activation situation when the switch is open. The alarm circuit further including either a series connected resistance or a normally open switch position in parallel to the normally closed switch position, to create a “fault” condition in the absence of detection of the resistance, or an open switch position and a closed switch position.
