A sealed clutch and a clutch plate, the sealed clutch including a spline connector for connecting the sealed clutch by splined connection to a transmission shaft of an automotive transmission. The spline connector comprising a connector housing and a spline ring. The spline ring including an opening having a spline configuration for cooperating with a splined portion of a transmission shaft. The connector housing being secured within the sealed clutch and the spline ring being removably connectable to the connector housing to enable the spline ring to be removed and replaced with a different spline ring for cooperating with a splined portion of a different transmission shaft. The clutch plate has a pair of drive plates having a coaxially aligned openings and a spline connector mounted between them. The outer diameter of the spline ring being slightly less than the inner diameter of the opening of one of the drive plates and a removable retainer being interposed between the spline connector and the drive plate to retain the spline ring, whereby removal of the removable retainer enables removal of the spline ring from the spline connector through the opening of the drive plate.

A sealed clutch (26) and a clutch plate (50), the sealed clutch (26) including a spline connector (58) for connecting the sealed clutch (26) by splined connection to a transmission shaft of an automotive transmission. The spline connector (58) comprising a connector housing (64) and a spline ring (66). The spline ring (66) including an opening (60) having a spline configuration (62) for cooperating with a splined portion of a transmission shaft. Angular displacement between the plate assembly (11 and 12) and the hub flange (24) in a first direction causes movement of the housing segments (32) towards each other to deform the dampers (33) and to increase the biasing load against further relative angular displacement.

A clutch assembly (10) including a clutch plate (14), an annular pressure plate (13), and a diaphragm (12) and a thrust bearing (22) mounted about an input shaft (19). The diaphragm (12) has a radially outer ring in engagement with the pressure plate (13) and a plurality of radially inwardly extending fingers extending inwardly from the ring to a position proximate the outer surface of the input shaft (19). The diaphragm (12) is mounted to a fulcrum (24) so that movement of the fingers in one direction results in movement of the ring in the opposite direction, whereby movement of the thrust bearing (22) in engagement with the fingers in a first direction towards the clutch plate (4) causes the diaphragm (12) to rotate about the fulcrum (24) and permits the pressure plate (13) to move to disengage the clutch assembly, while movement of the thrust bearing (22) in engagement with the fingers in the second direction causes the diaphragm to move the pressure plate to engage the clutch assembly. The clutch assembly includes a sensor (39, 40) to sense the position of the thrust bearing (22) when the clutch assembly (10) is engaged.
