The invention relates to a modular caisson for the construction of vertical dykes, and to a method for the assembly thereof. The caisson comprises: a base element (1) on which a lower slab (4) rests, forming the floor of the caisson; a plurality of ferrules (2, 2', 2'', 2''', 2'''') intended for being consecutively stacked in an upward direction, from the floor of the caisson in the outer perimeter thereof, with said ferrules (2, 2', 2'', 2''', 2'''') being connected horizontally to form a closed surface inside which the main space of the caisson is created; and a plurality of load pillars (3) disposed on the floor of the caisson and located in the main space thereof, said pillars (3) being connected to the lower slab (4). The invention provides an alternative modular caisson to the known caissons based on voussoirs, eliminating the risk of bending and breaking as a result of axial loads thereon.
