The invention relates to an animal leash, in which a drum reel (2) actuates under the effect of a return spring (4) for automatically reeling in a leash (3) leading to the housing (1). The drum reel (2) can be locked on one side by a manually actuatable locking key (6). An interlocking device (20) interacting with the locking key (6) is part of a locking lever (19) that can be pivoted and balanced on the drum reel, about a pivoting axis, and a tongue (7) that extends in the direction of the periphery of the drum reel (2) ends on said locking key (6). Said arrangement is advantageous in that the drum reel can turn relatively quietly because, due to the balanced mounting, the locking lever does not recoil directly behind the locking key during the return movement which produces grating noises.
