Apparatus for swaging a collar onto an externally grooved member
A manually held hydraulically and pneumatically powered swaging tool for swaging a collar (35) onto a grooved or threaded bolt (36) includes jaws (39) having internal grooves (40) which match the groove (20) on the bolt. The jaws (39) are openable to receive the projecting portion of the bolt (36) and are closable to engage the bolt. An anvil (26) outside the jaws is axially movable by hydraulic means forwards over the jaws to lock them into engagement with the bolt, and then to force the anvil over the collar (35) to swage it to the bolt. The tool includes a detection rod (40) for detecting when the bolt (36) has been fully inserted into the open jaw (39). Thereby to initiate closure of the jaws by pneumatic means. Also, initial forwards movement of the anvil (26) is arranged to move the jaws axially forwards by an appropriate small distance, if this is necessary to axially align the grooves (40) on the jaws correctly in relation to the groove (20) on the bolt to enable closure of the jaws.

The present invention provides a hydro-pneumatically operated fastener installation tool (2), including a head (4) having hydraulically driven gripping and pulling means for gripping and pulling the stem of a fastener, thereby to install the fastener, and a hydraulic inlet port (6) provided in the head (4) for supplying hydraulic fluid to a cylinder (8) to drive the gripping and pulling means, wherein the cross-sectional shape of the hydraulic inlet port (6) is non-circular, such that a cross section of the inlet port (6) has a longitudinal axis and lateral axis, wherein the longitudinal axis runs widthways across the tool head (4).

A container (12) for use with a tool (2) for installing fasteners of the type in which a part of the fastener is broken off during installation, the tool (2) having a body, the container (12) being for collectiing broken-off fastener parts during operation of the tool, the container (12) comprising: attachment means (20, 21) for removably attaching the container (12) to the body (8) of the tool, the attachment means (20, 21) being resiliently biased into attachment with the body (8) by resilient biasing means; and one or more contact region (22, 23) for receiving manual pressure from a user, at least one of the said one or more contact regions (22, 23) being coupled to the attachment means (20, 21); wherein the resilient biasing means are such that the attachment means (20, 21) can be detached from the body of the tool by the user applying manual pressure on the said one or more contact regions (22, 23) thereby detaching the container (12) from the body of the tool (2). Also provided is a fastener installation tool (2) having such a container (12).
A riveting tool (10) for placing a blind breakstem rivet (20), the tool comprising: a body (11); a nose casing (6) securable to the body, the nose casing having a nose tip (8); a jaw housing (7) inside the nose casing, the jaw housing containing jaws (5) for gripping and pulling a rivet stem (21) in use, the jaw housing having an end which incorporates an aperture through which the jaws are urged towards the nose tip by resilient biasing means (3); and adjustment means by which the distance from the end of the jaw housing to the inside of the nose tip may be adjusted. Preferably the adjustment means are provided by a thread on the nose casing, engageable with a corresponding thread on the body, thereby enabling adjustment of the distance from the end of the jaw housing to the inside of the nose tip. Also provided is a nose casing for a riveting tool, the nose casing having a nose tip or being configured to receive a nose tip, the nose casing incorporating adjustment means by which the distance from the inside of the nose tip to the end of the jaw housing of a riveting tool may be adjusted, and a method for altering the jaw separation distance of a riveting tool prior to gripping a rivet stem.
The invention relates to a self-tapping blind rivet (10) comprising a mandrel (12) and having a boring tip (16) on the end facing the workpiece. Said tip (16) is designed to bore the setting hole of the rivet. A positive-fit or non-positive fit connection is provided between the rivet mandrel (12) and the rivet shaft (18) and a force application point (26) for a tool is also provided on or in the rivet head (20). The invention also relates to a method for setting a blind rivet of this type.
A breakstem rivet placing tool conventionally includes a flow restrictions (14) for hydraulic fluid used to drive the tool in a stem pulling direction. This serves to prevent recoil of the tool due to rapid acceleration of an internal piston (4) when the stem of the breakstem rivet breaks. Prior art flow restrictions (14) create a jet (10) of high velocity hydraulic fluid into the tool which may damage components (26) by erosion. A revised fluid damper valve (14' ,14' ' ,14' ' ' ,40,42,42’) deflects and/or diffuses the fluid flow to avoid damage by erosion.
A manually held hydraulically and pneumatically powered swaging tool for swaging a collar (35) onto a grooved or threaded bolt (36) includes jaws (39) having internal grooves (40) which match the groove (20) on the bolt. The jaws (39) are openable to receive the projecting portion of the bolt (36) and are closable to engage the bolt. An anvil (26) outside the jaws is axially movable by hydraulic means forwards over the jaws to lock them into engagement with the bolt, and then to force the anvil over the collar (35) to swage it to the bolt. The tool includes a detection rod (40) for detecting when the bolt (36) has been fully inserted into the open jaw (39), thereby to initiate closure of the jaws by pneumatic means. Also, initial forwards movement of the anvil (26) is arranged to move the jaws axially forwards by an appropriate small distance, if this is necessary to axially align the grooves (40) on the jaws correctly in relation to the groove (20) on the bolt to enable closure of the jaws.
A blind fastener for insertion through an aperture in a workpiece, the fastener including a pin, a sleeve and an abutment member; wherein the abutment member can be removed from the sleeve so that the pin and sleeve can be forced out of the aperture, to remove the fastener therefrom, wherein the sleeve has a radially expanding head, which is received in a recess of the abutment member and wherein, prior to insertion of the fastener into the workpiece aperture, the abutment member is secured to the sleeve by deformation of part of the abutment member adjacent the recess over and into contact with the sleeve head.
