Abstract

Organ transplantation remains the only definitive therapeutic solution for many pathologies, but the number of currently available grafts is largely insufficient. A new approach is proposed to quantitatively evaluate isolated organs by ultrasound, which enables to safely admit more isolated organs as grafts available for transplantation. The isolated organ (2) is received in an organ preservation container (3) made of ultrasound transparent material, and the isolated organ is imaged by an ultrasound imaging probe (6) through the container (3). The ultrasound image of the isolated organ is used to determine a quantitative index representing viability of the isolated organ.

Abstract

Desiccation tolerance is a protective process that allows mature seeds to tolerate cellular water contents below 10%. This process is acquired during seed maturation and is usually lost during imbibition, prior to germination, what enhances seed sensitivity to drought and heat. The present invention shows that it is however possible to maintain desiccation tolerance mechanisms after germination by activating iron absorption in mature seed before germination begins. As shown in the present results, modulation of iron content in seeds can be performed by several means : (i) by genetic means, either by reducing the expression of genes involved in chromatin condensation (e.g., by reducing the expression of the clf, h2az or swn genes), or by over-expressing proteins known to enhance iron absorption (e.g., the IRONMAN or bHLHs proteins), or (ii) by chemical means, for example by applying synthetic IRONMAN peptides or simply their synthetic conserved domains issued thereof directly onto the mature seed. Thanks to these treatments, the present invention advantageously allows germinating seeds to tolerate strong heat/dehydration stress during a phase of high sensitivity of the young seedling, what will have a major impact on agricultural yields and production timing.

Abstract

The invention relates to a continuous process for the production of methionine or any methionine derivative chosen from its esters, its amides, its hydroxy and oxo analogs, the esters of said analogs and the amides of said analogs, from hydrogen sulfide or methanethiol, said process comprising the biological reduction of oxygen-containing sulfur compounds chosen from sulfates resulting from said process, to give hydrogen sulfide and/or methanethiol, said process comprising the following steps: providing a reactor with gas-permeable membrane(s), of MBfR (Membrane Biofilm Reactor) type, said membrane consisting of hollow fibers defining an inner lumen and an outer surface of the membrane, immersing the reactor membrane(s) in an aqueous liquid medium which comprises at least the oxygen-containing sulfur compound(s) and sulfate-reducing microorganisms (SRMs), so as to bring the outer surface or the lumen of the membrane into contact with said medium, injecting an electron-donating compound, in gaseous form, into the lumen of the membrane if its outer surface is in contact with the aqueous liquid medium, or in contact with the outer surface of the membrane if its lumen is in contact with the aqueous liquid medium, after sulfate reduction of the oxygen-containing sulfur compound(s) of the aqueous liquid medium by the SRMs, recovering the hydrogen sulfide and/or methanethiol from said aqueous liquid medium, reacting the hydrogen sulfide with methanol to obtain methanethiol and/or reacting the methanethiol with a precursor of methionine or of one of its derivatives in order to obtain, in one or more steps, a methionine salt or a salt of its derivatives, neutralizing said methionine salt or salt of one of its derivatives in the presence of sulfuric acid, and recovering the methionine or one of its derivatives and recycling the sulfates resulting from this neutralization into said aqueous liquid medium.

Abstract

An optimised bio-electrochemical reactor for treating a liquid effluent containing a biodegradable organic pollution. At least one of the anode and cathode compartments of the reactor is a microbial biofilm compartment (12) including a multi-stage current collector immersed in an electrolyte comprising electroactive microorganisms. This current collector includes at least two stages, each defining a chamber acting as a container for a biocompatible granular support material and letting the fluid pass through. The effluent circulates inside the compartment (12) according to an X direction crossing the stages of the current collector. In operation, the support material (17) is in a fluidised state resulting either from the circulation of the effluent, or from the circulation of a fluidisation gas allowing optimising the active surface of the electrode and, consequently, the treatment of the effluent.

Abstract

An in vitro or ex vivo method for producing and isolating a cell subpopulation including T cells specific for an antigen linked to a disease of interest, which includes steps of obtaining, from an isolated human biological sample, a population of mononuclear cells including T cells specific for the antigen with a high proliferative capacity, culturing these mononuclear cells in a suitable cell culture medium containing the antigen, and isolating T cells specific to the antigen which do not express the CD45RO and CD27 markers at their surface. The cell subpopulation thus obtained and isolated finds application in particular for the treatment of the disease of interest.

Abstract

The invention relates to a method for removing uremic toxins bound to a protein from the blood of a patient in need thereof. The method comprises the introduction in the blood of a displacer substance chosen from (C6-C12)-fatty acids, salts of (C6-C12)-fatty acids, a precursor of said (C6-C12)-fatty acids, or mixtures thereof. The displacer substance replaces the uremic toxins bound to the protein, thereby releasing unbound uremic toxins in the blood. The unbound uremic toxins are then removed from the blood by any method of dialysis. The method according to the invention involves low concentrations of displacer substance and is effective at plasma concentrations comprised in the range of from 0.5 to 3 mM.

The method according to the invention involves low concentrations of displacer substance and is effective at plasma concentrations comprised in the range of from 1 µM to 3 mM.

Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a new gene involved in sex determination in Cucurbitaceae. The loss of function of the protein encoded by this gene induces a transformation of female flowers to hermaphrodite flowers and fruits with non-altered shape. The present disclosure is thus directed to Cucurbitaceae plant modified so that expression and/or function of the protein encoded by said new gene is abolished; the plant having hermaphrodite flowers instead of female flowers and preferably fruits with a non-altered shape.

Abstract

Disclosed is a method of additive manufacturing by hot-extrusion, which method of additive manufacturing includes the following successive steps: a providing step, wherein a printable composition is provided, the printable composition including an aqueous printing matrix, in which non-gelatinized starch granules are dispersed, wherein the non-gelatinized starch granules are in a non-gelled state and have a gelatinization temperature below 70° C.; and a printing step, wherein the printable composition is subjected to a heat treatment and is deposited layer by layer. During the printing step, the printable composition is subjected to a succession of two different heating temperatures: a storage heating temperature, lower than the gelatinization temperature, in order to heat the printable composition without gelatinizing the non-gelatinized starch granules, and a printing heating temperature, higher than the gelatinization temperature, in order to gelatinize the non-gelatinized starch granules in the layers.

Abstract

The present invention concerns oxidative degradation of polysaccharides, and provides a composition, kit, and method for increasing the efficiency of recalcitrant cellulose degradation, using an auxiliary activity family 7 (AA7) enzymes and a polysaccharide monooxygenase enzyme (E.C. 1.14.99.-). Said AA7 enzyme comprises dehydrogenase activity (E.C. 1.1.1.-) and gluco-oligosaccharide oxidase activity (E.C. 1.1.3.-) and provides a novel “functionality” within a previously not described Glade of AA7 dehydrogenases.
