Abstract

Carbon footprint optimization of an electric vehicle, such as a heavy-duty e-truck, traveling in a trip across a highway network subject to a hard deadline constraint and one or more battery state-of-charge (SoC) constraints is carried out by co-determining a route plan, a speed plan and an intermediary charging plan for the electric vehicle with an objective of minimizing a carbon footprint incurred in the trip. In co-determining the three plans, a stage-expanded graph for modeling possible routing decisions of routing the trip in the highway network and possible charging decisions of charging the electric vehicle during the trip is constructed. The stage-expanded graph embeds information of arrival time and arrival SoC to facilitate modeling the charging decisions. The three plans are optimized by a dual subgradient method according to the stage-expanded graph under the objective of minimizing the carbon footprint while satisfying the constraints.

Abstract

In cell instance segmentation of an original cell image obtained by microscopy, the original cell image is rotated by a rotation angle to yield a rotated cell image. A first machine-learning model for cell instance segmentation processes the original and rotated cell images such that effectively, horizontal and oblique boxes are used in bounding cells of the original cell image for enhancing cell-segmentation accuracy. A set of predictions is generated for each cell instance identified from the original and rotated cell images, yielding a plurality of sets of predictions for all cell instances. The plurality of sets of predictions is processed to remove any set having predicted space not simply connected, any unwanted set classified by a second machine-learning model as a poor indicator according to a certain performance criterion, and any redundant set. The plurality of sets of predictions then produces a segmentation map for the original cell image.

Abstract

A centimeter-resolution integrated photonic millimeter-wave (mmWave) radar chip operating in the mmWave V band based on a 4-inch wafer-scale thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) technology is provided. The fabricated TFLN photonic mmWave integrated circuit has a first electro-optic modulator (EOM) capable of generating a broadband linear frequency modulated mmWave radar waveform through optical frequency multiplication of a low-frequency input signal, and a second EOM for frequency de-chirp of the reflected echo wave, thereby greatly relieving bandwidth requirements for the digital-to-analog converter in the transmitter and analog-to-digital converter in the receiver. In the absence of optical and electrical filters, the radar chip features continuous on-demand tunability of the center frequency and bandwidth, currently only limited by the bandwidths of electrical amplifiers. The radar chip provides a promising way to achieve high resolution sensing and detection for vehicle radar, airborne radar, and smart home in the 6G era.

Abstract

Similarity-based deformable registration of medical images that contain tumor regions often undesirably leads to disproportionate volume changes to tumor regions. An image-registration framework for preserving tumor volumes while promoting similarity in non-tumor part is provided. The framework involves a two-stage process. In the first stage, similarity-based registration is used to identify potential tumor regions by their volume change, generating a soft tumor mask accordingly. In the second stage, a volume-preserving registration network is used. The network uses a novel adaptive volume-preserving loss that penalizes the change in size adaptively based on the masks calculated from the previous stage. The framework balances image similarity and volume preservation in different regions, i.e. non-tumor and tumor regions, by using soft tumor masks to adjust the imposition of volume-preserving loss on each one. It ensures that the tumor volumes are preserved during the registration process.

Abstract

A general method for synthesizing a series of novel amorphous-crystalline palladium (Pd) -based heterophase nanocatalysts for various promising electrocatalytic applications. The synthesized amorphous-crystalline Pd-PdAu core-island nanocatalyst exhibits high activity, fast reaction kinetics, and excellent long-term catalytic stability toward glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR). Remarkably, the main product of glycerol catalyzed by amorphous-crystalline Pd-PdAu core-island heterostructure is glyceric acid, which possesses the highest commercial value among all the GOR products. The one-pot synthesized amorphous-crystalline Pd-PdPt Janus heterostructure shows remarkable catalytic activity, and fast reaction kinetics towards formic acid oxidation reaction (FOR) in alkaline solution in comparison with commercial Pt/C catalyst and amorphous Pd nanoparticles (NPs), which benefits the development of advanced electrocatalysts for practical applications. The synthesized amorphous-crystalline PdCu Janus heterostructures with bcc phase exhibit high activity, fast reaction kinetics, and excellent long-term catalytic stability for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR), benefiting the development of advanced electrocatalysts for practical applications.

Abstract

The present invention provides a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell and a lithium extraction device based on same. The PEC cell comprises: a substrate having a first surface and a second surface opposite to the first surface; a photo-absorber disposed on the first surface of the substrate; a protective layer disposed on the second surface of the substrate; and a catalyst layer disposed on the protective layer. The photo-absorber is spatially and functionally decoupled from the catalyst layer through the substrate to avoid the blocking of light to be absorbed by the photo-absorber caused by the shadowing effect of co-catalysts or gas products before it reaches the photo-absorber. Combining the decoupled PEC cell and Li-ion selective membrane, high-purity green Li is successfully extracted from seawater for the first time while storing solar energy as hydrogen energy with high efficiency.

A reversible phase transition in the whole semimetallic 1T′-tungsten disulfide (1T′-WS2) is realizable by proton intercalation and deintercalation, resulting in a newly-discovered semiconducting WS2 with a novel unconventional phase, denoted as 1T′d phase. A transport modulation with an on/off ratio of over 106 is realizable during the phase transition from the 1T′-WS2 to 1T′d-WS2. A transistor utilizing the advantage of reversible phase transition is developed by using a 1T′-WS2 nanosheet as a channel layer. A proton electrolyte contacts an edged circumference of the nanosheet for providing a reservoir of protons for proton intercalation and deintercalation of the nanosheet. The proton electrolyte is controllable by a gate-source voltage to intercalate or de-intercalate the nanosheet with protons for inducing a reversible phase transition over the nanosheet to thereby modify an electrical conductance of the channel layer or a spectral response of the channel layer to light.

Abstract

An integrated MWP processing engine based on a thin-film lithium niobate (LN) platform capable of performing computation tasks of analog signals up to 92G samples per second is provided. By integrating a high-speed electro-optic modulation block and a multi-purpose low-loss signal processing section on the same chip fabricated from a 4-inch wafer-scale process, we demonstrate high-speed analog computation, i.e. first- and second-order temporal integration and differentiation with computing accuracies up to 98.1%, and deploy these functions to showcase three proof-of-concept applications, namely, ordinary differential equation solving, ultra-wideband signal generation and high-speed edge detection of images. We further leverage the image edge detector to enable a photonic-assisted image segmentation model that effectively outlines boundaries of melanoma lesion in medical images, achieving orders of magnitude faster processing speed and lower power consumption than conventional electronic processors. Our ultrafast LN MWP engine provides compact, low-power, low-latency and cost-effective solutions.

Abstract

The present disclosure provides a LAMP-based, one-pot pathogen detection system and method integrating a high specificity assay for identifying true positive samples in an analyte before a whole course of LAMP reaction completes, in order to shorten the reaction time and reduce the likelihood of false positive results due to non-specific amplification or signal error (e.g., sample has too high pH) in the LAMP reaction. The present invention integrates an immunochromatographic assay such as lateral flow assay (LFA) in result interpretation from colorimetric and/or fluorimetric aspects of the LAMP reaction in order to enable a real-time pathogen detection, thereby improving the efficiency thereof with high specificity. The present detection system employs a single reaction system to enable multiple result interpretation, and the LAMP reaction can be carried out in a simple platform capable of generating constant heat.

Abstract

Electrocatalytic overall water splitting to generate hydrogen and oxygen is a green and sustainable approach with zero carbon emission, which is important for the future renewable energy landscape. The practical application of this approach is challenging due to the sluggish reaction kinetics of water activation at high current densities, which are hard to overcome. Although high-performance alkaline bifunctional electrocatalysts may be useful, current catalysts lack both activity and durability. One approach is to rationally design bifunctional two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures but obtaining an efficient and durable catalyst has proved difficult. The present disclosure relates generally to an electrocatalyst including a 2D heterostructure (Ru-CMOP), methods of making and using the same. The catalyst of the present disclosure is designed for high activity and good durability at industrial-level high current densities.

Abstract

Continuous miniaturization of semiconductor devices is the key to boosting modern electronics development. However, such downscaling strategy has been rarely utilized in photoelectronics and photovoltaics. Here, in this work, a full-vdWs 1D p-Te/2D n-Bi2O2Se heterodiode with a rationally-designed nanoscale ultra-photosensitive channel is reported. Enabled by the dangling bond-free mixed-dimensional vdWs integration, the Te/Bi2O2Se type-II diodes show a high rectification ratio of 3.6×104. Operating with 100 mV reverse bias or in a self-power mode, the photodiodes demonstrated excellent photodetection performances, including high responsivities of 130 A W−1 (100 mV bias) and 768.8 mA W−1 (self-power mode), surpassing most of the reports of other heterostructures. More importantly, a superlinear photoelectric conversion phenomenon is uncovered in these nanoscale full-vdWs photodiodes, in which a model based on the in-gap trap-assisted recombination is proposed for this superlinearity. All these results provide valuable insights in light-matter interactions for further performance enhancement of photoelectronic devices.

Abstract

A weakly-supervised framework for segmenting a three-dimensional (3D) medical image incorporates information of geometric prior and contrastive similarity in a loss-based fashion for enhancing distinguishability of an organ in presence of complex organ shape and image artifacts (e.g., low-contrast tissues) in the image. Training images with bounding-box annotations are used to train the framework. The geometric prior is advantageously built on point-cloud representations, which are much more fine-grained and flexible than volume representations, thus serving as better supervision than an inherent property of the bounding-box annotations (i.e. height and width). Furthermore, using contrastive similarity encourages organ pixels to gather around in a contrastive embedding space. It helps more-effectively distinguish low-contrast tissues from the background than using the conventionally-used gray space.

Abstract

A framework that comprises a reinforcement-learning-based neural-network for compressing, and for transmitting the compressed genomes over a data network in repeated steps each of a plurality of species. The framework also takes data on inefficient transmission of compressed genome in the preceding step, and feeds this data forward to modify the selection of the compression parameter in the present step. The invention provides the possibility that the genome of any species may be compressed optimally and transmitted in optimal efficiency. That is, big genome sequence is neither over compressed, which takes a lot of processing time leading to delays, nor under compressed which will require more time to transmit.

Abstract

Two-dimensional face presentation attacks are one of most notorious and pervasive face spoofing types, causing security issues to facial authentication systems. To tackle these issues, a cost-effective face anti-spoofing (FAS) system based on acoustic modality, named as Echo-FAS, is devised, which employs a crafted acoustic signal to probe the presented face. First, a large-scale, high-diversity, acoustic-based FAS database, named as Echo-Spoof, is built. Based upon Echo-Spoof, we design a two-branch framework combining global and local frequency features of the presented face to distinguish live vs. spoofing faces. Echo-FAS has the following merits: (1) it only needs one speaker and one microphone; (2) it can capture three-dimensional geometrical information of the presented face and achieve a remarkable FAS performance; and (3) it can be handily allied with RGB-based FAS models to mitigate the overfitting problem in the RGB modality and make the FAS model more accurate and robust.

Abstract

The present invention provides piezoelectric bio-organic films resembling ceramic-based piezoelectric films, and also a fabrication method thereof. In particular, the bio-organic piezoelectric films are formed by compact nanocrystals resembling the inorganic ceramic structure, where nanocrystallization on biomaterials and in-situ electric field are applied to facilitate domain orientation alignment across the entire films. The present fabrication method provides flexibility to tune various parameters of the resulting bio-organic films according to the needs, and therefore is substantially applicable to a wide range of biomaterials to form piezoelectric bio-organic films comparable to those formed by conventional piezoceramics in terms of piezoelectricity, thermostability and durability.

Abstract

A nano scale robotic system for single cell DNA sequencing of a strand of DNA positioned on a slide utilizes an atomic force microscope (AFM) having an end effector in the form of a cantilever with a tip. The AFM causes its cantilever tip to scan over the base pairs of the DNA strand. A pair of spaced-apart electrodes at the tip makes contact with opposite sides of the DNA strand and the current between bases of the DNA strand is measured by a current measurement system connected to the electrodes. An artificial intelligence-based data analytic system determines the DNA sequence based on the current from the current measuring system. The AFM tip is guided over the DNA strand by comparing compressed desired intensity local scan images and compressed actual intensity local scan images and using the difference to control the location of the tip.

Abstract

An electrotactile apparatus has an electrode-array unit and a driver unit for generating a haptic feedback to a user. The electrode-array unit uses electrodes to electro-stimulate the user's skin with pulsed voltage signals generated by the driver unit, inducing excitation currents flowing in the user to generate the haptic feedback. The driver unit is self-powered or wirelessly powered for supporting untethered electrotactile stimulation to the user. A common counter electrode installed on the driver unit contacts the user's skin and collects the excitation currents returned from the user. Advantageously, the common counter electrode is located on an outer surface of the driver unit and the driver unit is substantially flexible, facilitating the common counter electrode to seamlessly contact the user's skin for achieving a stable electrode-skin interface while positioning the driver unit as a whole on the user's skin to provide untethered virtual touching experience to the user.

Abstract

The present invention provides a surface tension assisted film forming method to prepare a flexible, patterned piezoceramic composite for use in a variety of electronics. The present method allows tuning mechanical and piezoelectric properties of the resulting composite by simply adjusting one or few parameters used during the piezoceramic film forming and/or composite forming procedures in the absence of any complex transferring techniques that are commonly used in conventional methods. The present invention also allows customizing patterns (two-dimensional or three-dimensional) on the piezoceramic framework to result in a piezoelectric composite that is able to provide anisotropic piezoelectric responses to different loads whilst still having a constant electrical output over a long-time deformation.

Abstract

DeepOPF-V, a deep neural network (DNN)-based voltage-constrained approach for solving an alternating-current optimal power flow (AC-OPF) problem, is used to determine an operating point of an AC electrical power system. DeepOPE-V advantageously uses two DNNs to separately determine voltage magnitudes and voltage phase angles of buses in the system without cross-over operations between the two DNNs. A computation complexity is reduced when compared to using a single DNN for generating both the magnitudes and phase angles, allowing high computation efficiency achieved by DeepOPE-V. Remaining variables of the system are computed based on the determined magnitudes and phase angles. A solution for the operating condition is predicted. A fast post-processing (PP) method is developed to improve the feasibility of the predicted solution. The PP method uses linear adjustment to adjust the predicted solution to improve the solution feasibility while enabling fast execution of the PP method.
