An oral care device is described for contacting or transferring a dental composition to the hard or soft surfaces of the teeth comprising a backing layer and a discontinuous pattern of a dentally therapeutic composition. A method of using said oral care device to effectuate an aesthetic or therapeutic treatment is also described, whereby the oral care device is placed against the surface of at least one oral cavity structure, the discontinuous pattern of dentally therapeutic composition is contacted with or transferred to said structure. The backing layer may be left in place during the treatment period, or optionally removed from the oral cavity while leaving the therapeutic composition in contact with the target structure.
This invention relates to a curing light device capable of curing dental composites with a means to blow air. The blown air is directed from the curing light onto the tooth that is exposed to the curing light. The blown air has the effect of cooling the surface of the tooth to maintain patient comfort and efficient curing of dental composites
A method for simultaneously cleaning and whitening teeth comprising the steps of: applying a conditioning composition to the teeth surface, applying an oxidizing composition to the teeth surface, applying a sealant composition to the teeth surface, cleaning the teeth surface, polishing the teeth surface and removing the condition compositions from the teeth.
Highly stable thickened compositions for whitening teeth are described which contain high levels of hydrogen peroxide but do not require refrigeration or other special storage conditions to attain an extended shelf life.

A dental handpiece with an integrated camera and computer (3). Computer receives information input by dental professionals and data retrieved from integrated sensors. Computer allows pre-programmed procedural steps and information supplied by dental professional to be stored for later use. Computer transmits camera image, stored information and real-time procedural data to dental professional via attached monitor. Computer assists dental professional in handpiece set-up and procedural steps including feedback as treatment proceeds. Based on data received from the user and sensors (22), the computer dynamically makes adjustments to the procedural steps as well as handpiece mechanical motion, such as, but not limited to, rotational speed, rotational direction, torque, advance feed rate, and withdraw rate.

The present invention is related to devices utilized for retraction of the lips, tongue and oral cavity during dental procedures. In particular, the invention relates to a flexible or semi-flexible oral device used to comfortably and quickly retract the patient's lips to properly expose the patient's teeth and gums for dental procedures.
Dental instruments; retractors [medical instruments]; lip retractors; cheek retractors; devices that expand the mouth to improve the field of view inside the mouth.
The present invention describes an ultrasonic dental insert capable of enhanced operating efficiency. A first transducer generates ultrasonic vibrations. A connecting body has a proximal end and a distal end having a tip attached thereto. The proximal end is attached to the first transducer so as to receive the ultrasonic vibrations therefrom and to transmit the ultrasonic vibrations toward the tip attached to the distal end. The ultrasonic dental insert may be inserted into a handpiece for providing electromagnetic energy to the first transducer to generate the ultrasonic vibrations. The ultrasonic insert, when seated in the handpiece, is substantially decoupled, on a rotary axis, from the handpiece. A rotary force need only be applied to the insert to rotate it in the handpiece. At least one light source substantially proximate or distal to the tip may also be provided.
The present invention is directed to dental prophylaxis devices that improve portability, maneuverability and aid in retaining clean conditions for use on dental patients, particularly to dental handpieces. The present invention is also directed prophylaxis or prophy angles for use with such handpieces. In general, a dental prophylaxis device includes a handpiece and a prophy angle which includes a driven shaft and a prophy cup attached for rotation thereto. The handpiece generally includes a body which houses a rotational source coupled to an output shaft which couples to the driven shaft in the prophy angle via angled gear interfaces on the output shaft and the driven shaft.

A powered dental tool generally includes a tool tip at its distal end, a body at its proximal end and a motion generating mechanism. In one aspect, the dental tool includes a tool tip having a proximal end and a distal end along a generally longitudinal axis and a reciprocating motion generating mechanism. The reciprocating motion generating mechanism may repeatedly move the tool tip generally back and forth by a given displacement generally along the tool tip's longitudinal axis. This displacement generally resembles the action of a hand scaler, i.e., a reciprocating motion along the longitudinal axis of the scaler, which is unlike the vibration of most powered scalers. Such action may be advantageous as it may be more intuitive for the dental professional or hygienist and may provide more effective scaling action. It may further be advantageous for a powered scaler to more closely resemble a hand scaler in form, which is small, portable and untethered. In one embodiment, the motion generating mechanism may include a rotational source and set of opposing magnetic transfer elements.

The dental implement may include a tongue scraper, a dental floss, a toothpick, a toothbrush or combinations thereof. The dental implement may include a strip having a longitudinal dimension that is longer than its traverse dimension. The strip may be coated with a coating of a mixture including at least one medicament and a water soluble or erodible carrier. In one embodiment, the coating may be present on at least one of the longitudinal edges, for example, of a tongue scraper, toothpick or a dental floss. In another embodiment, the coating may be present on at least one of the traverse edges, for example, of a tooth pick or the bristles of a toothbrush.

The present invention relates to ultrasonic dental tools having an insert that includes monitoring mechanism(s) for usage, performance and indication mechanism(s) for replacement. The dental tool includes a dental insert having a transducer for generating ultrasonic vibrations. The ultrasonic dental insert includes a housing and a connecting body having a proximal end and a distal end having a tip attached thereto. The proximal end is attached to the transducer so as to generate the ultrasonic vibrations therefrom and to transmit the ultrasonic vibrations toward the tip attached to the distal end. In one aspect, the ultrasonic dental tool includes monitoring systems for tool usage and condition. The dental tool may include, for example, usage time monitoring circuitry, wear usage circuitry, electromagnetic monitoring circuitry and/or any other appropriate monitoring systems.
The present invention relates to ultrasonic dental tools having an integral sheath and at least one light source adapted to utilize the electromagnetic energy already available in the existing ultrasonic dental unit. The handpiece includes a substantially hollow housing having a primary power source that may include a coil. In one aspect, the ultrasonic dental insert includes a sheath. The sheath may be formed such that it may cover at least part of the handpiece housing. In general, the sheath may serve as a barrier such that it may reduce cross-contamination to and from the patient's mouth. During operation, the primary coil of the handpiece may be inductively coupled to an illumination energy coil such that the illumination energy coil may draw energy from the electromagnetic field of the primary coil to power at least one light emitting element.
A dental lamp includes a control system adapted to control operation of a light source within the dental lamp. The control system requires that an unexpended light guide including a recordable medium be coupled to a lamp head of the dental lamp, in order to illuminate the light source. The control system records a first data signal on the recordable medium during illumination of the light source indicating that the light guide has been expended. The control system also records a second data signal onto a second recordable medium so that a particular duration of use of the light source may be indicated.
