MANUFACTURING AN ASSEMBLY OF A FIRST AND A SECOND OBJECT
A method of manufacturing and assembling a first and a second object wherein the first object is made by bringing a flowable compound into a first object shape and then subjecting the flowable compound to a hardening process that results in a change of a chemical composition of the flowable compound, thereby creating the first object or a part thereof. Then, the first object is positioned relative to a second object, and a flow portion of the hardened article of the modified compound is caused to become flowable by an input of energy. An interpenetration zone of the flow portion and structures of the second object is created, and the flow portion is allowed to re-solidify, whereby the interpenetration zone between the re-solidified flow portion and the structures of the second object secures the first and second objects to each other.
A method for joining two objects by anchoring an insert portion provided on one of the objects in an opening provided on the other one of the objects. The anchorage is achieved by liquefaction of a thermoplastic material and interpenetration of the liquefied material and a penetrable material, the two materials being arranged on opposite surfaces of the insert portion and the wall of the opening. Before such liquefaction and interpenetration, an interference fit is established in which such opposite surfaces are pressed against each other, and, for the anchoring, mechanical vibration energy and possibly a shearing force are applied, wherein the shearing force puts a shear stress on the interference fit.

Method of anchoring a first object in a second object
A method for joining two objects by anchoring an insert portion provided on a first object in an opening provided on a second object. The anchorage is achieved by liquefaction of a thermoplastic material and interpenetration of the liquefied material and a penetrable material, the two materials being arranged on opposite surfaces of the insert portion and the wall of the opening. During the step of inserting the insert portion in the opening and/or during anchorage a clamping force is applied to opposing surfaces of the second object to prevent the second object from cracking or bulging.

According to an aspect of the invention, a method of mechanically securing a first object (1) comprising a thermoplastic material in a solid state to a second object (2) with a generally flat sheet portion, with a perforation (20) of the sheet portion, and with the sheet portion having an edge (21) along the perforation is provided, wherein the first object is positioned relative to the second object so that the edge is in contact with the thermoplastic material and wherein mechanical vibration energy is coupled into the assembly comprising the first and second objects until a flow portion of the thermoplastic material due to friction heat generated between the edge and the thermoplastic material becomes flowable and flows around the edge to at least partially embed the edge in the thermoplastic material. After the mechanical vibration stops, the thermoplastic material is caused to re-solidify, whereby the resolidified thermoplastic material at least partially embedding the edge anchors the first object in the second object.

METHOD FOR JOINING A DEVICE TO AN OBJECT WITH THE AID OF ULTRASONIC VIBRATION ENERGY AND DEVICE AND INSTALLATION SUITABLE FOR THE METHOD
Disclosed is a method for joining a device (1) to an object (2) with the aid of a combination of ultrasonic vibration energy and induction heating, wherein the device (1) comprises a portion (1.1) of a thermoplastic polymer and a susceptor additive wherein this portion (1.1) is at least partly liquefied or plasticized through the ultrasonic vibration energy in combination with the induction heating and wherein the joining comprises establishing a connection between the device (1) and the object (2) which connection is at least one of a positive fit connection, a weld, a press fit connection, and an adhesive connection. Therein the induction heating on the one hand is applied for rendering the named device portion (1.1) suitable for absorption of ultrasonic vibration energy or better suitable for such absorption than other device portions by raising its temperature, in particular by raising its temperature above the glass transition temperature of the polymer. The ultrasonic vibration energy on the other hand is used for liquefying or at least plasticizing the thermoplastic polymer of the named device portion (1.1).

A joining element (1) has an anchoring portion (12) for in-depth anchoring in the object and a head portion (11) arranged proximally of the anchoring portion with respect to an insertion axis (10). The head portion has a lateral outer surface that has a structure that is well-defined, especially within tight tolerances. The joining element is positioned relative to an object (2) of a non-liquefiable material of in a manner that the anchoring portion (12) reaches into an opening (3) of the object or is placed adjacent a mouth thereof. Then, the joining element is pressed towards a distal direction, to press the anchoring portion into the opening, and at the same time mechanical vibration energy is coupled into the joining element by a tool (6), in an amount and for a time sufficient for liquefaction of a portion of the thermoplastic material to cause interpenetration of the thermoplastic material into structures of the object. The method comprises leaving the lateral outer surface of the head portion intact, thus unaffected by the pressing and the vibration.
A first object (1) is anchored in a second object (2). The first object has a material with thermoplastic properties, and the second material has a material that is solid and is penetrable by the first material when in a liquefied state. The second object has an insertion face (22) with an opening (23) having a mouth in the insertion face, and the first object has an insert portion (12) that for anchoring is placed in the opening or about the mouth thereof. For anchoring, energy suitable for liquefaction of the first material impinges in an amount and for a time sufficient for at least partial liquefaction of the first material and interpenetration of the first and second materials. The second object (2), around the opening (23), has an anisotropic strength with respect to forces perpendicular to the opening axis (25). A cross section of the opening perpendicular to the opening axis (25) and a cross section and orientation of the insert portion (12) are adapted to each other so that upon insertion of the insert portion in the opening opposite surface areas of insert portion and opening are pressed against each other by a pressing force, the pressing force between the opposite surface areas acting in a first direction of smaller strength of the second object (2) being smaller than the pressing force acting in a second direction of larger strength.
An EEG headpiece comprises an array of electrode pins (10), each electrode pin extending between a proximal end, formed by a proximal end face (14), and a distal end and comprising a conducting electrode (12) and a thermoplastic material (11). The thermoplastic material is arranged at least around a periphery of the electrode pin or is pressable from a hollow space to the periphery. Each electrode pin is equipped for the transmission of energy, especially mechanical vibration energy, from the proximal end face to the thermoplastic material to liquefy at least portions of the thermoplastic material from a solid state to a flowable state, whereby the thermoplastic material is capable of flowing into structures of a tissue portion (1) surrounding the periphery and of forming, after re-solidification of the thermoplastic material, an anchoring of the electrode pin in the tissue portion.

Device and method for establishing an anchorage in tissue
A perforated sheath is anchored in a tissue opening with the aid of a tool, wherein the anchorage is achieved with the aid of mechanical vibration and a material which is liquefiable by the vibration. The tool includes a vibrating element and a counter element. Distal portions of both elements are introduced into the sheath to be in contact with each other at an interface. The vibrating element is connected to a vibration source and the vibrating element and the counter element are held against each other for effecting liquefaction of the liquefiable material at the interface. Under the effect of the force applied to the vibrating and counter element for holding them against each other, the liquefied material flows from the interface through the sheath perforation and penetrates the tissue.

An implant or endoprosthesis suitable to be implanted in human or animal tissue includes two (or more than two) parts to be joined in situ. Each one of the parts includes a joining location, the two joining locations facing each other when the device parts are positioned for being joined together, wherein one of the joining locations includes a material which is liquefiable by mechanical vibration and the other one of the joining locations includes a material which is not liquefiable by mechanical vibration and a structure (e.g. undercut cavities or protrusions) suitable for forming a positive fit connection with the liquefiable material. The joining process is effected by pressing the two device parts against each other and by applying ultrasonic vibration to one of the device parts when the two parts are positioned relative to each other such that the two joining locations are in contact with each other.

Method and machine for joining two objects (1, 5) by anchoring an insert portion (6) provided on one of the objects in an opening (2) provided on the other one of the objects. The anchorage is achieved by liquefaction of a thermoplastic material and interpenetration of the liquefied material and a penetrable material, the two materials being arranged on opposite surfaces of the insert portion (6) and the wall of the opening (2). Before such liquefaction and interpenetration, an interference fit is established in which such opposite surfaces are pressed against each other, and, for the anchoring, mechanical vibration energy and possibly a shearing force (22) are applied, wherein the shearing force puts a shear stress on the interference fit.
Method and machine for joining two objects (1, 5) by anchoring an insert portion (6) provided on a first object (6) in an opening (2) provided on a second object (1). The anchorage is achieved by liquefaction of a thermoplastic material and interpenetration of the liquefied material and a penetrable material, the two materials being arranged on opposite surfaces (18, 19) of the insert portion (6) and the wall of the opening (2). During the step of inserting the insert portion (6) in the opening and/or during anchorage a clamping force is applied to opposing surfaces (3) of the second object to prevent the second object from cracking or bulging.
