INTERCONNECT DEVICE FOR DETECTING VEHICLE ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTICS POWER FAULTS
An interconnect device detects whether an vehicle onboard diagnostics (OBD) data port includes a blocking diode that prevents back- feeding of power through the port. If there is a diode the device a OBO II port connector, therefore an alternate means is used to preserve the data. The alternative power supply can be connected to battery cables. The alternative power supply is used until a new battery is reconnected to the vehicle battery cables. If there is no diode, the interconnect device displays this fact to the user. The interconnect device detects when a diode is connected in series with a power pin of the OBD II port connector. In addition, the interconnect device includes OBD II port connector on one end. connected by way of a cable to a connector, such as a cigarette lighter connector or hardwired directly to an alternate power supply.

THERMAL RUNAWAY PROTECTION SYSTEM FOR A BATTERY CHARGER
A protection system and method for a battery charger for detecting a thermal runaway condition in a battery during charging in order to protect the battery when a thermal runaway condition is detected. The protection system in accordance with the present invention does not require external temperature sensors nor does it rely on actions by the technician or user. The system includes one or more electrical sensors normally provided with conventional battery chargers for sensing electrical parameters during charging and providing an indication of a possible thermal runaway condition based upon the trend of the electrical charging parameters. The protection system monitors charging characteristics of a battery for complete or partial charging cycles. If charging characteristics deviate from normal or indicate an anomaly, determined by software, the system assumes there may be a thermal runaway condition and executes a protection measure, such as terminating charging of the battery.

An iron core transformer with at least one primary winding and at least one secondary winding of which at least one of the windings are wound with aluminum wire is disclosed for use in relatively low power applications, for example 5 kVa or below. The primary and secondary windings are connected to primary and secondary terminals. In order to overcome the effects of oxidation of the aluminum wire over time which can result in compromising the connection between the aluminum wire and its corresponding terminal, the terminals are formed as insulation displacement type terminals that are configured to strip any coatings or other contaminants on the aluminum wire during insertion of the aluminum wire into the terminal. The terminals are further configured to apply a constant spring biasing force against the aluminum conductor after it has been inserted. Thus, the transformer in accordance with the present invention is able to take advantage of the relatively low cost of aluminum wire, while at the same time providing stable connections between the aluminum wire and the transformer terminals. In order to facilitate the assembly of the transformer, in accordance with one aspect of the invention, a number of sockets are integrated into the bobbin for receiving the transformer terminals.
A battery charger is disclosed for use with various batteries, such as automotive and marine-type batteries. In accordance with an aspect of the invention, the charging current is alternated between non-zero DC charging current levels. By alternating the charging current between non-zero DC charging levels, the battery can be charged to a higher capacity (i.e., ampere hours) faster, thus reducing the charging time and at the same time allow the rating of the battery charger to be increased, hi accordance with another important aspect of the invention, the technique for alternating the charging current can be implemented in both linear and switched-mode battery chargers.
A high frequency battery charger includes a converter, drive logic, and control logic. The converter transforms a DC voltage into a high frequency AC voltage. The drive logic controls a conversion of the high frequency AC voltage through a train of pulses. The control logic adjusts the output of the converter to maximize a charging cycle of a battery. The method of transforming an AC input into a direct current output used to charge a rechargeable battery includes transforming an AC input into a first DC output; transforming the first DC output into a high frequency AC output; transforming the high frequency AC output into a second DC output; and passing a charging current to an external load when the load is correctly connected to an output.
