ACTIVE TRANSIENT VOLTAGE SUPPRESSION DEVICE

Application Number US2014038205
Publication Number 2014/186577
Status In Force
Filing Date 2014-05-15

Abstract

An active transient voltage suppression device is disclosed which may utilize an activation network to turn on a semiconductor switch. The activation network may be triggered based on the rate of change of voltage on the protected input of the device. More than one such device may be cascaded in parallel to increase energy dissipation without device screening and may provide a stable voltage limit over a wide range of operating currents. The device may be tested for open and short failure modes in circuit.

Abstract

A generator with relatively high (Length/Diameter) aspect ratio, which may be mounted within the rotating mast of a helicopter, and which may generate power that is conditioned by a rotating power conditioning unit and delivered to the rotating rotor blades without the use of slip rings, is disclosed. The generator may be arranged to take advantage of the available space within the mast. Temperature of the mast and generator may be controlled by varying the wall thickness of the mast wall and using cooling fins on the mast and a cooling dome.

Abstract

An integrated starter-generator (ISG) utilizes a dedicated, properly sized start box for the starting function, and a fully controllable hybrid homopolar machine with a generator control unit (GCU) for the generate function. The hybrid homopolar machine may comprise a permanent magnet (PM) section that is supplemented by a homopolar field section, which results in a regulated output voltage by either boosting or bucking the voltage out of the PM section vectorially through a common stator.

Abstract

A generator arrangement is provided in which the functionality of two typically separate electrical power generators are combined together into a single generator that forms part of a three-in-one combined multi-generator which has a dual drive path with a shear section that immunizes one of the generators (e.g., the permanent magnet generator) within the single combined multi-generator from a failure of another generator (e.g., the main generator) within the single combined multi-generator.
