The invention relates to a cleaning device comprising a cleaning roller (17). Preferably, two charging electrodes (23, 24) are disposed adjacently to the cleaning roller, electrically charging the surface of the cleaning roller such that electrical field forces are exerted on the residual toner remaining on a developer roller (18) after developing. The residual toner transferred to the cleaning roller is guided past the charging electrodes. In order to prevent buildup of residual toner on the charging electrodes due to the charging potential present at the charging electrode, the charging electrodes are adjacent to the cleaning roller, such that the residual toner on the cleaning roller wipes along the charging electrodes and wipes away toner adhering thereto.

For the state of the mixture, a characteristic value D or E is determined from model calculations, an operating ageing rate or a time constant being taken into account. The development process is subjected to open-loop or closed-loop control depending on the characteristic values D and/or E.

According to the invention, trappings are detected only on the edges of one respective object when the brightness of the respective object to the adjoining area differs by an amount that is higher than the predetermined threshold value.
