Abstract

A flexible display includes a plurality of pixel chips, chixels, provided on a flexible substrate. The chixels and the light emitters thereon may be shaped, sized and arranged to minimize chixel, pixel, and subpixel gaps and to provide a desired bend radius of the display. The flexible substrate may include light manipulators, such as filters, light convertors and the like to manipulate the light emitted from light emitters of the chixels. The light manipulators may be arranged to minimize chixel gaps between adjacent chixels.

Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for electroluminescent display (ELD) elements having wrap-around electrodes. The systems and methods of the present invention produce an individually sized and shaped modular EL element or chip which is supported by glass substrates. Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for electroluminescent display elements which are glass supported. These electroluminescent display elements include an EL element or nixel structure that makes use of two rear or substantially same-sided electrodes that are electrically separated by a small gap or other non-conductive (e.g., insulating) material, but that generally cover the rear area of the EL element or nixel laminate. This EL element has a glass plate applied on the other side of the EL element. These EL elements may be made by growing the layers one on top of the other on one side on the glass plate, or a free standing EL element may be made using a ceramic substrate having a front surface onto which the layers are deposited. The back surface of the ceramic substrate may then be ground down to be thinner and the two back electrodes applied to this back surface, after which a glass plate is applied to the other side of the element.

In one embodiment, a hybrid display that may include a first light emitter of a first type and a second light emitter of a second type that define first and second addressable subpixels of a hybrid pixel. The first and second light emitters may be coupled to a support and provided with drive means for emitting light. The hybrid subpixels may be arranged in a variety of formats to provide a desired emission of light from the hybrid pixei. The support may be flexible to provide a flexible hybrid display. A dummy subpixei may be provided for spacing or to allow for transmission of light from another light emitter and light guides may be provided for guiding light to the dummy subpixei.

Abstract

A voltage partitioned display (VPD) is presented that provides a flexible uniformly bright large area display panel that is easily scalable. The VPD of the invention can be variously shaped and, due to its flexibility, can be rolled to facilitate packaging and shipping. The VPD can comprise a single substrate tile or a plurality of substrate tiles and may include display elements of a variety of display technologies such as, but not limited to electroluminescent displays, plasma displays, liquid crystal displays, etc. The substrate tile of the VPD is voltage partitioned into display subportions so that the display elements within each display subportion receive substantially the same scanning voltage, thereby producing a uniformly bright display. Vias can extend from a front substrate surface to a rear substrate surface to provide electrical connectivity between display elements on the front surface and drive circuitry on the rear surface of the substrate.

A flexible movie theater display is presented. In an exemplary embodiment, the movie display of the invention is in the form of a FLEXED1 a flexible emissive display, comprising a flexible substrate, display elements coupled to the flexible substrate, and conductors used to deliver a drive voltage to the display elements. A FLEXED of the invention can be partitioned among conductors to provide a cinema-sized uniformly bright display. Systems and methods are provided for front contacts utilized with electroluminescent displays. According to an embodiment of the invention, the system and method can include arranging a plurality of electroluminescent elements, where each electroluminescent element includes at least one top electrode, and where the electroluminescent elements are operable to emit electroluminescence from the top electrode, and providing a conductive layer, where the conductive layer is flexible and substantially transparent. Abstract

The present invention provides apparatus, methods and systems for an electroluminescent (EL) display. An exemplary embodiment of an EL apparatus of the invention is in the form of an EL strip. The EL strip may comprise a Supportive Electrode Strip (SES) adapted to receive an EL stack, and an EL stack deposited thereon. The SES comprises a conductive substrate. The EL stack deposited on the SES to form an EL strip may include several layers. The EL strips may be grouped together to form an EL strip panel. The EL strips may also be electrically connected to form an EL panel and EL panels can be electrically connected to form an EL display. Methods for making and testing such systems and components are also disclosed.
