Abstract

The present invention pertains to an absorbent material structure for absorbing oil-like liquids and a manufacturing process for such material structure. The invention indicates an advantageous use of the material structure and provides an absorbent material to be primarily used in the absorption of hydrocarbon oil, crude oil and motor oil. The absorbent material structure according to the present invention is an open-cell and highly hydrophobic polyurethane foam. Among other uses, this polyurethane foam can be applied to recover petroleum from a floating slick or spill or to control the oil leaks in boat marinas by absorbing continuously the residues that usually exist in the water surface.
