Abstract

A method of preparing a silicon-containing polymeric structure coated/encapsulated active ingredient is disclosed. The method has the steps of providing an insoluble active ingredient; dispersing the active ingredient in a liquid medium to form a suspension of the active ingredient; adding a silicon-containing polymeric structure precursor to the suspension; and reacting the precursor to form the silicon-containing polymeric structure. The silicon-containing polymeric structure is formed around the active ingredient, thereby forming a silicon-containing polymeric structure coated/encapsulated active ingredient. The silicon-containing polymeric structure coated/encapsulated active ingredient may be used in place of the active ingredient itself.

Abstract

The present invention relates to an antimicrobial composition comprising an isothiazolinone, such as 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one, and a zinc compound selected from zinc salts, zinc oxides, zinc hydroxides or combinations thereof. Useful zinc salts include for example, oxides, sulfates, chlorides, and combinations thereof. In use, the zinc from the zinc compound enhances the antimicrobial activity to the isothiazolin-containing composition. This enhancement permits achieving the desired antimicrobial activity at a lower usage rate than is achieved using the isothiazolinone in the absence of the zinc compound. The antimicrobial composition can also contain co-biocides, such as pyrithiones, including zinc pyrithione or copper pyrithione.

Abstract

The control of the microbial contamination during the sugar fermentation in the processes for obtaining alcohol is a very important action to increase the productivity of the alcoholic fermentation processes. The Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cells engage a very tough nutritional competition for the sugarcane juice with the bacteria (Lactobacillus sp and Acetobacter) and the wild yeasts. The proposed composition uses an antimicrobial agent of the guanidine family, such as for example, poly(hexamethyl biguanide), an antibiotic agent, and also a surfactant agent, to prevent the undesired microbial growth. The present invention further refers to the process for controlling the microbial contamination through the use of said agents.

Abstract

A method of producing a finish for a paper substrate, wherein the finish provides the paper substrate with a color that matches the color of a target object. In accordance with the method, calculations are performed to determine the quantities of at least one group of colorants required to produce a semitransparent wood stain from a vehicle, wherein when the semitransparent wood stain is applied to the paper substrate, the paper substrate will have a color that matches the target object. The calculations are performed using reflectance measurements of the target object obtained using a spectrophotometer and previously obtained spectral data of the colorants as applied to a paper substrate. The colorants used to form the transparent or semitransparent wood stain do not include a white colorant or black-and-white masstone.
