Abstract

A surgical simulation device is disclosed that allows a structural heart disease (SHD) team, including a surgeon and an imaging specialist to perform a simulated cardiac intervention procedure using a patient-specific model that replicates biomechanical and echogenic properties of a specific patient to be operated on. The surgical simulation device can include a station with a tank for receiving a patient-specific cartridge with the patient-specific model. The device can also include an esophageal access system in the station and a vascular access system that couples to an access port of the station.

Abstract

A method and computer program for calculating proximal and distal ends of an interlaced device before being positioned in a vascular structure are proposed. The method comprises receiving a three-dimensional image of a vascular structure in which an interlaced device with a singularity at a proximal and/or distal end will be positioned. A central line of said structure which defines a direction in which the interlaced device is to be deployed is traced. A point Pd on the traced central line and the local morphology of the vessel are defined, wherein point Pd indicates the point where the distal end of the interlaced device will start to be deployed. A proximal point Pp is calculated using the distal point Pd and the local morphology of the vessel, both having been defined. The proximal and distal ends are calculated depending on if the singularity is at the proximal and/or distal ends.

Abstract

A device and system for simulating normal and disease state cardiovascular functioning, including an anatomically accurate cardiac simulator for training and medical device testing. The system and device uses pneumatically pressurized chambers to generate ventricle and atrium contractions. In conjunction with the interaction of synthetic valves, which simulate mitral and aortic valves, the system is designed to generate pumping action that produces accurate volume fractions and pressure gradients of pulsatile flow, duplicating that of a human heart. Through the use of a control unit and sensors, one or more parameters, such as flow rates, fluidic pressure, and heart rate, may be automatically controlled, using feedback loop mechanisms to adjust parameters of the hydraulic system to simulate a wide variety of cardiovascular conditions including normal heart function, severely diseased or injured heart conditions, and compressed vasculature, such as hardening of the arteries.

Abstract

A method for fabricating a physical simulation device of an internal element of interest (9) located inside an object. The method comprises the steps of: receiving one non-destructive measurements of an imaged region, determining a three dimensional model of the imaged region (8) and materials of the object in locations of the three dimensional model, generating first and second volumetric models (18) from the three dimensional model, computing a deformed configuration of the first volumetric model under predefined loads and constraints on the basis of assigned intrinsic material properties, assigning to elementary volumetric elements of the second volumetric model (18) materials on the basis of the deformed configuration of the first volumetric model, fabricating a simulation device of the internal element of interest according to the second volumetric model (18) with the assigned materials.

Abstract

A method for generating a 3D model for fabricating a multi-material object using additive manufacturing. The method comprises providing a first volumetric model of an object in a deformed configuration, generating a second volumetric model from the first volumetric model and assigning materials to the second volumetric model by: a) defining a cluster of elementary volumetric elements of the second volumetric model, b) selecting a cluster object material in the database of object materials by minimizing a cost function determined by computing a deformed configuration of the second volumetric model under a set of predefined loads and constraints, c) partitioning the elementary volumetric elements of the cluster in two sub-clusters based on the deformed configuration, d) repeating step b) for each sub-clusters. The method further comprises generating a 3D model for fabricating an object from the second volumetric model and the assigned materials.

Abstract

The present invention describes a device and system for simulating normal and disease state cardiovascular functioning, including an anatomically accurate left cardiac simulator for training and medical device testing. The system and device uses pneumatically pressurized chambers to generate ventricle and atrium contractions. In conjunction with the interaction of synthetic valves which simulate mitral and aortic valves, the system is designed to generate pumping action that produces accurate volume fractions and pressure gradients of pulsatile flow, duplicating that of a human heart. Through the use of a control unit and sensors, one or more parameters such as flow rates, fluidic pressure, and heart rate may be automatically controlled, using feedback loop mechanisms to adjust parameters of the hydraulic system simulate a wide variety of cardiovascular conditions including normal heart function, severely diseased or injured heart conditions, and compressed vasculature, such as hardening of the arteries.

In conjunction with the interaction of synthetic mitral and aortic valves, the system is designed to generate pumping action that produces accurate volume fractions and pressure gradients of pulsatile flow, duplicating that of a human heart. Abstract

A simulation device is disclosed for practicing manipulations of at least one elongated medical instrument, comprising a housing presenting at least one instrument input and enclosing a first motion sensor for tracking the motions of a first elongated medical instrument inserted therein. The housing encloses a bifurcating device having one input connected to the instrument input as well as at least a first and a second outputs. The bifurcating device further comprises a deflecting mechanism for guiding the first and a second elongated medical instruments from its input, respectively, through the first and second outputs, the first output being connected to the first motion sensor while the second output is connected to a second motion sensor for tracking the motions of the second elongated medical instrument. Thus, the operator's feelings are very close from those of a real medical intervention, the respective behaviour of the instruments being substantially identical.

Abstract

A portable medical simulation system and method employs an artificial patient with a built-in haptic interface device, with up to four carriages for engaging different diameter catheters. A catheter stabilizer between each carriage expands and contracts in an accordion fashion as the carriages move in relation to each other, preventing the catheter from bending and bowing. A contrast display visual effect derived from a particle emitter software tool simulates the release of radiopaque dye within a simulated vasculature system for display on a monitor. A computer software based system is used for generating haptic effects on the catheter through control signals passed to each of the carriage motors controlling translation movement of the catheter and magnetic particle brakes controlling rotational movement of the catheter.

Abstract

A visual effect creation system and method is software designed for creating, maintaining, and displaying real-time 3D visual effects. There are two parts to the software. The first part is the creation and maintenance tool and the second part is a real-time display module. The creation and maintenance tool contains the real-time display module which greatly aids the creation phase. The real-time display module is also designed to integrate the 3D visual effect created with the creation and maintenance tool into the platform of the final product. With the creation and maintenance tool the user can create individual and modular 3D visual effects, which can later be incorporated into other effects or used as a stand-alone 3D visual effect. The data structure for each 3D visual effect is based on a hierarchical node design (parent-child relationship) which allows for inheritance of specific attributes from the parent to the child.

Abstract

A method for training a user in a medical procedure utilizes an interactive computer system with a virtual representation of at least one organ and at least one instrument. The representation of surface area parts of the virtual organ to be treated are covered with a graphical identification marker. The computer system includes a table stored in memory comprising situations arising within the medical procedure predefined through positions of the instrument(s), positions of the organ(s), the logical sequence of steps to be executed within the medical procedure, different aspect values for the graphical identification markers and assessment values for the situation. Upon interaction of the user with the organ and the instrument, graphical identification markers change their aspect according to the stored value in the table for the predefined situation and the corresponding assessment value is stored in a history log table within the computer system.
