Abstract

A method of determining an aim point of a firearm or simulated firearm at a time of firing by continuously pulsing a laser coaxially aligned with a barrel of the firearm or simulated firearm. The aim point is then continuously detected by a camera system observing the target. A shot firing event is detected and the last detected laser pulse location on the target prior to the shot firing event is determined. The aim point of the firearm or simulated firearm at the time of firing is extrapolated from the last detected laser pulse location and at least one laser pulse location prior to the last laser pulse location.

Abstract

Brake wear sensors for the brake disc stacks commonly used in aircraft brake systems are disclosed. An ultrasonic transducer is employed to transmit signals to a reflective surface and to receive the reflected signals in return. The time that elapses between the transmission of the ultrasonic signal and the reception of its reflection correlates with the separation between the transducer and the reflective surface. The reflective surface is operatively connected to a pressure plate of the associated brake disc stack such that, as the stack wears, the reflective surface is displaced along with the pressure plate. That displacement correlates with brake wear. In one embodiment, the ultrasonic brake wear detector is an independent unit mounted to the brake housing, while another embodiment includes the detector as an integral portion of a brake actuator connected to such housing. A third embodiment for use with brake disc stacks exhibiting substantial wear before requiring service employs either twin cylinders, one with a piston and the other a wear pin, or a single cylinder housing a wear pin operatively fixed to the brake disc stack.

Abstract

Features for a valve assembly are described. The features can include a pair of spaced walls having apertures defining non-linear exit flow paths for the fluid, such as air, exiting the valve. In some embodiments, the features are described for a bleed valve assembly, to reduce the decibels produced when used in high pressure contexts, such as aircraft engines. The noise suppression features are integrated with the valve assembly. A valve, such as a stem and valve head, can move within the assembly between open and closed positions. The valve assembly can be manufactured using additive layer manufacturing (ALM) to create a monolithic housing that in some embodiments has the noise suppression features built into the assembly.

Abstract

A method for characterizing the health of a rechargeable battery includes measuring initial condition parameters of a rechargeable battery prior to the battery being placed into service. A baseline normalization of the initial condition parameters is performed using a standardized relationship data set for a norm battery to generate baseline normalization coefficients to normalize the initial condition parameters to the norm battery. Run-time condition parameters of the battery are measured after the battery is in service as part of a continuous built in test system. The run-time condition parameters are normalized using the standardized relationship data set for the norm battery and the baseline normalization coefficients to generate normalized run-time condition parameters for the battery. The normalized run-time condition parameters are then compared to the standardized relationship data set for the norm battery to calculate a state-of-charge and state-of-health for the battery as the run-time condition.

Abstract

Upgrading existing aircraft braking systems to accommodate replacement of existing brake units employing sintered friction materials with brake units employing carbon-carbon composite friction materials is often desirable. However, when upgrading the braking systems it is necessary to ensure that the integrity of the existing airframe is not compromised by the use of the new brake assemblies employing the carbon-carbon composite friction materials. Consequently, the present invention replaces existing pressure control valves of existing braking systems with an electronic control unit (126) coupled to a pressure control servovalve (128), thereby ensuring proper application of hydraulic pressure to brake assemblies (122). An advantage of this invention is that the pressure profile of the hydraulic fluid is controllable and hence the integrity of the airframe is maintained.

Abstract

A light based projectile detection system for use with a firearm and a virtual firearms training simulator includes a self-sealing screen having a proximal side and a distal side. A scenario projector transmits a simulation onto the proximal side, and a light source faces the distal side. The light source selectively projects light onto the distal side of the screen when the firearm is shot, such that light from the source traverses the screen after contact by a projectile. A camera monitors the light traversing the aperture created by the projectile to determine and associate the position of impact and transmit that information to a scenario computer. The system may include an audio detection circuit to monitor the sound generated by the firearm and transmit a signal to a flash controller to cause the light source to illuminate. The screen will then re-seal around the hole so that the light no longer traverses the screen.

Abstract

A power system is configured to provide a regulated voltage to an electrical load connected to a power source through at least one power line. The power system includes a first voltage control loop based on a remote sense signal indicative of voltage level at the load. The power system further includes a second voltage control loop based on a local sense signal indicative of a level of output voltage at the power source. The voltage level of the local sense signal is generally at a higher voltage level relative to the voltage level of the remote sense signal. Circuitry is configured to pass just the signal with the higher voltage level to ensure that the local sense control loop is a dominant control loop with respect to the remote sense control loop. This avoids effects on the power source from one or more failure modes that can occur in interconnections of the system.

Abstract

A layer height measuring system in one embodiment has a transmission line including a probe for measuring a height of a first layer within a tank and a cable that connects the probe to an electronics unit. The electronics unit cyclically transmits interrogation pulses to the probe and receives reflections therefrom for time domain reflectometric measurement of the height of the first layer. The layer height measuring system may also have a memory and a processor configured by the memory to perform the steps of detecting first and second impedance transitions corresponding to first and second boundaries of a bounded region of known length; optimizing a sweep offset and a sweep gain so as to cause swept sample collection to occur substantially only within the bounded region; and detecting a third impedance transition within the bounded region, the third impedance transition corresponding to an interface between the first layer and a second layer, the first and second layers having respectively different dielectric constants.

Abstract

An electro-hydraulic brake system for a vehicle can include a hydraulic piston that exerts a force on a brake pad in a direction away from a brake disk and opposite to a force exerted, e.g., by a spring, on the brake pad in a direction toward the disk. A hydraulic pressure actuator can in one embodiment actuate the hydraulic piston to hold the brake in a disengaged position. A controller can in one embodiment actuate the hydraulic pressure actuator to advance the brake pad into engagement with the disk to exert a braking force based on a brake command signal, and can in one embodiment actuate the hydraulic pressure actuator to retract the brake pad from engagement with the disk upon receipt of a brake release signal. The brake pad can move into engagement with the brake disk when an emergency (e.g., loss of power or hydraulic pressure) occurs.
