A multi-component sensor of a fluid-borne acoustic wave that senses pressure and up to three orthogonal particle motion components. The sensor is unresponsive to motion of the sensor mount. Furthermore, the sensor is substantially unresponsive to the turbulent flow of the acoustic medium past the sensor.
A seismic streamer system and associated methods for estimating the shape of a laterally steered seismic streamer. The streamer is divided into a series of contiguous streamer segments by lateral-steering devices. Heading sensors positioned in forward and aft portions of each segment produce heading readings. Each segment is modeled as having a linear shape in the forward portion and a curved shape in the aft portion. The shape of the segment is estimated according to the model from the heading readings on the segment.

An underwater seismic system for reducing noise due to ghost reflections or motion through the water from seismic signals. The system includes two motion sensors. One sensor has a first response and is sensitive to platform-motion-induced noise as well as to acoustic waves. The other sensor has a different construction that isolates it from the acoustic waves so that its response is mainly to motion noise. The outputs of the two sensor responses are combined to remove the effects of motion noise. When further combined with a hydrophone signal, noise due to ghost reflections is reduced.

An underwater ocean bottom cable constructed of a series of axially aligned cable segments alternately arranged with sensor units. The sensor units include an outer housing with an interior cavity in which a sensor module is suspended by a cradle. Vanes on the sensor module protrude through axially elongated openings in the outer housing to dig into the seabed to provide good seismic coupling between the seabed and pressure sensors and motion sensors housed in the sensor module. The outer sensor housing is split into complementary portions that clamp firmly onto the ends of adjacent cable segments. Stress members, such as high modulus fiber ropes, extend out the ends of adjacent cable segments. Axial channels formed in the intervening outer sensor housing on opposite sides of the sensor module receive the stress members, which, along with the cradle, provide seismic isolation between the cable segments and the sensor modules.
A two-tier communication system for a seismic streamer. The communication system operates over an unshielded twisted-pair communication line extending the length of the streamer. Repeater units having a repeater function and a device controller function divide the twisted pair into line segments. Coils on each segment couple signals inductively to collocated external devices in a low-speed 2400 baud FSK data link between the devices and an associated device controller. A Gaussian 8-level FSK high-speed 60 kbit/s data link is established along all the segments with the repeaters re-transmitting boosted signals along the entire length of the communication line. The coils are transparent at the high-speed data rate. Time division multiple access (TDMA) or frequency division multiple access (FDMA) is used to accommodate the two links on the single twisted pair.
A method and system for controlling the shape and separation of an arrangement of streamers towed behind a survey vessel (10). Each streamer is steered laterally by lateral steering devices (16) positioned along its length at specific nodes. Each streamer is driven by its lateral steering devices to achieve a specified separation from a neighboring streamer. One of these actual streamers, used as a reference by the other actual streamers, is steered to achieve a specified separation from an imaginary, or ghost, streamer virtually towed with the actual streamers.

SEISMIC STREAMER WITH IRREGULARLY SPACED HYDROPHONES
A seismic streamer and a method for positioning a group of hydrophones in a seismic streamer. The hydrophones in a group are spaced irregularly along the length of the streamer to reduce the influence of bulge-wave noise and flow noise on the hydrophone group response. The irregular spacing may be produced as pseudorandom deviations of the actual positions of the hydrophones from a nominal uniform spacing of hydrophones.
A position controller capable of controlling the depth or lateral position of a towed array. The position controller comprises a tubular fuselage from which a pair of wings may be extended over a range of sweep angles between fully open and stowed positions. In fully or partly open positions, two wings present a positive angle of attack relative to the axis of the fuselage. In the stowed position, the wings are fully retracted into a wing receptacle within the fuselage for unfettered passage into and out of a submarine on the array deployment and retrieval handling system. The sweep angles of the two wings are independently adjustable by first and second actuators.
A motion sensing transducer is disclosed that includes a case having an inner surface, a first cap that closes the case at a first end and a second cap that closes the case at a second end. The case inner surface, first cap and second cap define a space within the case. The apparatus further includes at least one inner plate member separating the space into at a first compartment and a second compartment within the case, a coil-magnet assembly that produces a signal when subjected to motion, the coil-magnet assembly disposed immediately within the case and in the first compartment, and an electronic circuit disposed within the second compartment that modifies the signal.

DEVICE AND METHOD FOR LATERALLY STEERING STREAMER CABLES
A device and a method for laterally steering a streamer cable towed underwater behind a seismic survey vessel. The device includes a cable-steering assembly rotatably attached to a streamer cable. The assembly includes a body to which one or more wings are mounted. The wings are arranged to pivot about pivot axes. The assembly is ballasted so that the pivot axes of the wings are largely in a vertical plane. A conventional cable-leveling bird is converted to one version of a cable-steering device by ballasting to maintain the pivot axes of the bird's wings largely vertical. With an orientation sensor for sensing the orientation of tile wings, the cable-steering device adjusts the angle of the wings to provide a sideward component of force to steer the streamer.
