Abstract

A network control and rate optimization solution for multiuser multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) communications in wireless networks. This solution is decentralized and includes scheduling and routing of the MU-MIMO communication links that adapt to dynamic channel, interference, and traffic conditions. The ergodic sum rates of MIMO multiple access channel (MAC) and interference channel (IC) configurations are analyzed by considering the error, and overhead effects due to channel estimation (training) and quantization (feedback). By taking practical considerations such as channel estimation, quantization error and in-network interference into account, the rate gain is shown with an increasing number of antennas compared with single-input single-output (SISO) systems. A distributed channel access protocol to select and activate MU-MIMO configurations is presented with the maximum achievable sum rates using local information on channel, interference, and traffic conditions. The scheduling algorithm is extended to routing via a cross-layer solution based on a decentralized version of the backpressure algorithm. After accounting for the control message overhead, it is shown that the proposed MU-MIMO scheduling and routing solution improves the stable throughput over the minimum distance routing based on frequency of encounters and single user MIMO communications in a mobile ad hoc network (MANET) setting.

Abstract

A means and system is designed to distinguish human users from bots (automated programs to generate posts or interactions) in social media (including microblogging services and social networking services) by assigning a likelihood score to each user for being a human or a bot. The bot score assigned to each user is computed from statistical, temporal and text features that are detected in user's social media interactions (relative indicators specific to a given social media data set) and user's historical profile information.

Abstract

System and means generates synthetic forms of social media data such as data from microblogging services (e.g., Twitter) and social networking services (e.g., Facebook). This system and means jointly generate interaction graph structures and text features similar to input social media data. First, an interaction graph is generated by mapping social network interactions in input (real) social media data to graph structures. This interaction graph is fitted to a social network model (or a composite model) by minimizing the distance between the input and the synthetic interaction graphs (of potentially different sizes). The distance is measured statistically or based on the performance of social media analytics. Various patterns (such as anomalies), interaction types and temporal dynamics are generated synthetically. Second, text features are extracted from input social media data with topic modeling and statistical analysis of word tuple distributions. Based on these features, synthetic social media text is generated. Third, synthetic graph structures and text features are combined to generate the synthetic social media data. The system is particularly useful in generating data to be used for developing and testing new social media analytics or for generating or analyzing social bot network behavior and campaigns in social media, and for sharing test data with others without rate and privacy concerns.

Abstract

Computationally efficient, highly accurate, and cost-effective approach for detection of damage in a structure is described. Methods include a combined analysis in both global and local regions of a structure to predict the received wave signals at a location due to scattering of Lamb waves at a damage site. Through comparison of an actual received wave signal with the predicted signals, identification of damage location and/or type can be provided. Methods can be particularly beneficial when considering damage assessment in a complex structure that includes plate-like structures that include an extension off of a base plate, e.g., a stiffened structure.

Abstract

A security control system is provided that works as an extra layer of defense as a way to prevent an “attack” that is initiated by modifying either the “jump” or the “return” addresses or both. The principal behind the security control system is to “monitor” the addresses to which the processors would jump, interrupt or return, and identify when these addresses are modified in a manner that does not comply with the normal execution of the processor. In order to do that the security control system uses existing structures in multi-core processors and even anticipates the creation of additional structures to expedite and improve such control.

Abstract

A method of generating graphical models for providing security analysis in computer networks that in one embodiment includes the steps of generating a type abstract graph independent of particular networks that models abstract dependency relationships among attributes and exploits; generating network-specific attack graphs by combining the type abstract graph with specific network information; monitoring an intruder alert; and generating a real-time attack graph by correlating the intruder alert with the network-specific attack graph. The real-time attack graph can be generated using reachability checking, bridging, and exploit prediction based on consequence alerts and may further include the step of calculating the likelihood of queries using a Bayesian network model. The method may also include the steps of inferring unobserved attacks that may have been missed by intrusion detection sensors, and projecting on which hosts and using what exploits additional intruder attacks may occur. The method may further include the step of comparing alternate actions by computation, wherein the alternate actions include the step of patching some vulnerabilities, and wherein the specific network information includes network topology. The specific network information may also include firewall rules.

Abstract

An automatic target tracking system and method employ an image capturing system for acquiring a series of images in real time of a distant area containing a remote target, and a processing system for processing the acquired images to identify the target and follow its position across the series of images. An automatic beam steering and method operate in conjunction with a laser source for emitting a laser beam to be transmitted in the form of a transmitted laser beam extending along a steerable beam transmission axis to the remote target. The beam steering system is controlled by the processing system to steer the beam transmission axis to be aimed at the target being tracked by the target tracking system, so that the transmitted laser beam will be transmitted at the appropriate angle and in the appropriate direction to be aimed at the tracked target.

The method may include the steps of demodulating the signals received by the antennas, providing a digital signal processor, and performing matched filtering on received signals. The method may also include the step of estimating a target range of identified targets using the digital signal processor.

Abstract

A printed circuit board (PCB) coil linear actuator is disclosed. The actuator includes a coil assembly and a magnet assembly. The coil assembly includes a plurality of PCB coils electrically connected in series. The PCB coils arranged in a row and adjacent PCB coils are separated by a gap. Each PCB coil includes a low aspect ratio, multi-layer coil member disposed on a board member. The actuator assembly includes a plurality of magnet units arranged in a row, wherein adjacent magnet units are separated by a gap. When the actuator is assembled, the PCB coils arranged in alternating sequence with the magnet units. The PCB coil linear actuator is intended to replace traditional slotted bobbin voice coil actuators (VCAs) and is particularly useful in fast steering mirror (FSM) applications. The PCB coil linear actuator provides many advantages over a VCA of an equivalent motor constant, including improved performance, lower weight and a lower profile.

Abstract

An MHD sensor/actuator is provided for generating torque as well as sensing angular displacements around a sense/torque axis. A column of conductive liquid which rotates within a circumferential channel having an inner circumferential surface and outer circumferential surface provides an inertial proof mass, the relative motion of which within the channel generates a torque or represents a sensed displacement about the common axis of the circumferential channel. According to certain embodiments, a cylindrical column of magnets are located coaxially with the circumferential channel to produce a radially oriented magnetic field which is perpendicular to the common axis. According to other embodiments, a magnetic ring is provided coaxially with the circumferential channel to produce a magnetic field in the direction of the common axis.

Abstract

An automated system for tool mark analysis includes an acquisition mechanism for acquiring 3D data of tool marks left on the surfaces of specimens by tools, a signature generation module for generating tool mark signatures from the acquired data, an analysis unit for comparing pairs of the tool mark signatures to obtain a numerical similarity value reflective of their similarity, and a database in which the similarity values are stored. An automated method for tool mark analysis involves the steps of acquiring the 3D data of tool marks, generating the tool mark signature, statistically evaluating pairs of the tool mark signatures, and providing a numerical similarity value for each pair of tool mark signatures reflecting the degree of similarity between the tool mark signatures of each pair. The method is carried out with automated assistance of a computer.
