Display assemblies utilizing air characteristic data to verify internal operating conditions and related systems and methods are disclosed. The display assembly (10) includes a side assembly (14), including an electronic display (15), is connected to a structural framework (12). Sensor(s) (20, 22, 24, 26, 32) are provided, at least one of which is located at, or fluidly connected to, a closed airflow pathway. A controller (28) receives data from the sensor(s) and based on data from at least one of the sensor(s) determines whether an initial indication of an operating condition exists. If so, a testing routine is initiated, additional data is received from the sensor(s) during and/or thereafter. The controller confirms whether the operating condition exists based on the additional data.

Abstract

A LCD assembly having a dynamic dimming LCD backlight and a plurality of individual LCD displays positioned in front of the backlight, and a method for controlling a backlight of such an assembly. The backlight is divided into an array of individually controllable subsections, and adjacent edges of the LCD displays are used to define virtual boundary lines relative to the backlight subsections. Initial desired luminance values are determined for each subsection of the backlight based on incoming video data. A difference between desired luminance values for each pair of adjacent backlight subsections that border the virtual boundary lines is calculated and compared to a threshold value. Based on the comparisons, adjustments may be made to the desired luminance value of the backlight subsections.

A system and method for preventing image retention in an electronic display. A time threshold (TT) and a pixel threshold (PT) may be defined. The system preferably performs a checksum calculation of all pixel data within an active image area of the electronic display for an interval of time until reaching TT. A series of metallic plates are preferably positioned within each heat exchanger layer and are preferably aligned with the power module brick. A circulating fan may be positioned to force circulating gas across the power module brick and through the heat exchanger. An external air fan may be positioned to force external air through the heat exchanger. Pass through junctions may be positioned near edges of the heat exchanger to permit the circulating gas to cross paths with the external air without allowing the two gas flows to mix with one another.

An apparatus and method for reducing the thermal inertia of an electronic display based on the amount of ambient light present. An ambient light sensor is used to measure the amount of ambient light which is contacting the display. To anticipate a temperature rise and lower the thermal inertia of the display, the fan speed is increased when high ambient light levels are measured at the exterior of the display but prior to a substantial increase in temperature. A system and method for controlling the backlight of a liquid crystal display (LCD) to account for ambient light penetration through the LCD stack and into the backlight cavity. A first light sensing device may be placed to measure the ambient light while a second light sensing device may be placed within the backlight cavity to measure the backlight luminance. A method for bonding glass components using an optional encapsulated photo-initiated optical adhesive, and a glass assembly method using said optional adhesive. A mixture containing a catalyst and a resin is provided where either the catalyst or the resin (or both) are encapsulated. The mixture is applied to a glass component. The proper luminance may be less than the maximum or typical luminance that is produced by common LED backlights. By reducing the luminance the resulting display can have less power consumption, longer lifetime, and higher contrast ratios. The original subpixel voltages for the LCD are re-scaled based on the proper luminance for the backlight subsection. Virtual backlight data may be created to simulate the luminance at each subpixel and the virtual backlight data may be used to re-scale the original subpixel voltages. The virtual backlight data may be used to blend between adjacent subsections of the LED backlight which may be producing different levels of luminance.

A system and method for displaying multiple images on a single display. A plurality of unique video sources may be provided where each video source provides video frames having a plurality of vertical lines. A portion of the vertical lines are captured for each video source and transmitted to the display. The partial video frames may then be re-assembled into a single video frame which can be shown on the display. The display contains a masking where only certain vertical lines are viewable at certain angles. The masking may allow two or three images to be simultaneously visible to the observer, depending on the angle of viewing the display. Wireless or wired transmission may be used. An LED circuit using a combination of series and parallel arrangements for optimum current sharing between LEDs. The current paths allow an LED to fail without resulting in other LEDs failure or noticeable luminance variance across the circuit. Some embodiments use metallic PCB technology which permits optimum thermal regulation of heat generated by the LEDs. A cooling assembly for an electronic image assembly and a display assembly containing the same. Some embodiments use ambient gas to cool power modules and/or an image assembly (sometimes backlight). Other embodiments use a closed loop of circulating gas which passes across the front surface of an image assembly and through a heat exchanger. Raw video data is encoded as a plurality of JPEG frames. A plurality of packets are created which may contain one frame or a portion of a frame of video. Embodiments relate generally to various thermal control features for electronic displays. One feature comprises a closed loop isolated gas chamber, where a first chamber is in contact with the display surface and transfers heat between the isolated gas and the display surface.
