Abstract

Systems, devices, and methods are described for drawing materials. In certain embodiments, the material is metal tubing that is hollow along its length. The drawing system may include a first drawing machine that is fixed or stationary and a second drawing machine that moves relative to the first drawing machine. In certain embodiments, the position of the second drawing machine is determined with respect to a desired position, wherein the second drawing machine is downstream from the first drawing machine, and wherein the material is successively drawn by the first and second drawing machines. The drawing speed of the first drawing machin e may be adjusted from a first speed to a second speed based on the determined position of the second drawing machine. A programmable logic controller may be provided to control, at least in part, operations of the drawing system.

Abstract

Systems, devices, and methods are described for extruding a material. In certain embodiments, an extrusion press system includes an extrusion die supported by a first support structure and a centering insert supported by a second support structure, wherein the centering insert guides a material to be extruded into the extrusion die. A positive stop may be coupled to the first support structure and extend towards the second support structure, wherein the positive stop defines a travel distance between the first support structure and the second support structure. In certain embodiments, movement of the second support structure towards the first support structure is limited by the positive stop to the travel distance. In certain embodiments, the positive stop is configured to adjust the travel distance.

Abstract

Systems, devices, and methods for continuous extrusion of material billets are provided. A die assembly for press extrusion of a material includes a plurality of die plates forming a die body. The die body has an entrance and an exit having a diameter smaller than the entrance, with a tapered surface between the entrance and the exit. Each die plate has a center bore with a tapered interior surface, and the interior surfaces form the tapered surface that extends from the entrance to the exit. A base is coupled to the die body, and rotation of the base causes rotation of the die body. A billet pressed into the die body is heated by friction between the interior surface and an outer surface of the billet. The billet is heated to a deformable temperature and is extruded into a tube product as the billet is pressed from the entrance to the exit of the die body.

Abstract

Systems, devices, and methods are described for extruding materials. In certain embodiments, one or more hollow billets are loaded onto an elongate mandrel bar and transported along the mandrel bar to a rotating die. The billets are transported through fluid clamps, which engage the mandrel bar and provide cooling fluid to the mandrel bar tip, and through mandrel grips, which engage the mandrel bar and prevent the mandrel bar from rotating. One or more press-rams advance the billets through a centering insert and into the rotating die. A quench assembly is provided at an extrusion end of the extrusion press to quench the extruded material. A programmable logic controller may be provided to control, at least in part, operations of the extrusion press system.

Abstract

Systems, devices, and methods are described for cooling extruded materials. In certain embodiments, a quench tube is provided that includes an inner wall and an outer wall having a channel therebetween for transporting cooling fluid along the quench tube. A passage within the inner surface of the inner wall receives an extruded material through a nozzle formed at an end of the quench tube that delivers the cooling fluid to the extruded material. The channel may be angled at the nozzle to deliver the cooling fluid at an angle with respect to the quench tube, and the quench tube is configured to extend at least in part within an extrusion die.
