Abstract

A medication delivery device (MDD) (e.g., injection pen, wearable pump) is paired with an external device (e.g., smart phone, iPad, computer) via wireless link or wireline connection. The MDD provides to the external device captured data from the flow sensor relating to medicine delivery to a patient to ensure complete delivery and minimize MDD misuse or malfunction or inaccuracies in dosing. The MDD can have Bluetooth™ and/or near field communication (NFC) communication circuits for proximity-based pairing and connectivity with the external device for real-time or deferred transfer of captured data to the external device, depending on memory and power availability at the MDD. The MDD or external device can use captured data and corresponding time stamps to determine flow infomatics such as flow rate, total dose delivered, and dose completion status. An LED on the MDD indicates states such as powered on, paired, delivery in progress and delivery completion.

Abstract

A passive safety needle shield is provided. The needle shield comprises a base fixed to a proximal end of a needle, and an enclosure housing initially disposed at a distal end of the needle and enclosing the end of the needle. A hinged arm connects the base and the enclosure housing. The enclosure housing is slidable along the needle length, and the hinged arm flexes to permit the enclosure housing to move along the needle as the needle is inserted into a user, thereby hiding the needle end, and providing support to the needle to avoid bends or buckles in the needle. The hinged arm is biases in the initial position so that the enclosure housing returns to the end of the needle as the needle is withdrawn.

Abstract

A pen needle (30) for a delivery device includes a hub (32) supporting a needle (54) and a distal needle shield (70) that can retract to expose the needle during injection and return to the extended position after use and lock in the extended position to cover the needle. A proximal needle shield (0.102) moves from a retracted position to an extended position with respect to the hub to shield or cover a proximal end of the needle when the needle hub is separated from the delivery device. A spring (130) extends between the distal needle shield and the proximal needle shield to bias each needle shield to the respective extended position. The distal needle shield (70) is coupled to the proximal needle shield (102) in an initial position to retain the spring (130) in a compressed state. The distal needle shield (70) is depressed to disengage the distal needle shield from the proximal needle shield (102) so that the spring expands to an extended state and moves the shields to the extended positions. A locking member (142, 156) can be provided to lock the proximal needle shield (70) and distal needle shield (102) in the extended position.

Abstract

Systems and methods encourage users to rotate injection sites and avoid lipodystrophy. Sleeves and/or lost-tooth gear dials and/or microswitches in or on injection pens or their caps, on vials, and on other portable devices manually adjust an indicator before or after an injection to show a current or next injection site in accordance with a site rotation plan. Injected medicine packaging and related printed indicia encourage site rotation. Optical devices employing optical mouse or projection technology help locate and/or distribute injection sites within a body area. A mobile phone app tracks injections and locations to select next injection site, and can use imaging to locate a target injection site and optionally diagnose lipodystrophic conditions and record them. Tactile and print media educational tools are presented to help users palpate and identify lipos in body areas having injection sites.

Abstract

A pen needle includes a hub supporting a needle and a distal needle shield that can retract to expose the needle and return to an extended position to cover the needle. A proximal needle shield moves to an extended position to cover a proximal end of the needle. A spring extends between the distal and proximal needle shields to bias the distal and proximal needle shields to their respective extended positions. A locking member on the distal needle shield cooperates with the hub to lock the proximal and distal needle shields in their respective extended positions. An indicator in the hub couples to the distal needle shield when the distal needle shield is moved to a retracted position. The indicator moves with the distal needle shield to the extended position of the distal needle shield where the indicator indicates that the pen needle is no longer usable.

Abstract

An injection sensing device (ISD) (e.g., wearable patch) is paired with an external device (e.g., a medication delivery pen and/or smart phone, iPad, computer) via wireless link or wireline connection. The ISD senses fluctuations in local skin temperature during an injection and provides to the external device captured data from the sensor relating to medicine delivery to a patient to ensure complete delivery and minimize MDD misuse or malfunction or inaccuracies in dosing. The ISD or external device can use captured data and corresponding time stamps to determine flow informatics such as flow rate, total dose delivered, and dose completion status. An LED on the ISD indicates delivery in progress and/or delivery completion.

Abstract

Devices, systems and methods are provided to detect when items are removed from a multiple cavity carrier (MCC) that stores items (e.g., pen needle assemblies) in respective cavities. A separate, reusable data collection unit (DCU) can be mounted to the MCC and has sensors for detecting cavity status (e.g., empty or filled with an item). The DCU stores data related to time stamps, optional dates, and cavity locations of item removal from and optional used item return to respective ones of the MCC cavities to help users track item usage (e.g., pen needle assemblies) to improve medication delivery management such as insulin injections with an injection pen and pen needle assemblies. Indicators can be generated to indicate from which cavity the next item should be extracted to encourage injection site rotation.
