Abstract

The present invention relates to a biologically degradable superabsorber based on polyglutamic acid (salt) and the preparation thereof. It was the objective to provide a biologically degradable superabsorber with improved performance. This problem has been solved by a method for preparing a water-absorbing polyglutamic acid (salt), comprising the of: i) providing an aqueous mixture of a non-crosslinked polyglutamic acid (salt) and at least one crosslinker, ii) crosslinking the non-crosslinked polyglutamic acid (salt) to obtain a crosslinked polyglutamic acid (salt)-gel, iii) drying the crosslinked polyglutamic acid (salt)-gel to obtain a dried crosslinked water-absorbing polyglutamic acid (salt), iv) heat treating the dried crosslinked water-absorbing polyglutamic acid (salt) in the presence of at least one facilitator to obtain the water-absorbing polyglutamic acid (salt).

Abstract

The present process separates acrylic acid from a composition containing acrylic acid and at least one accompanying product. The process first involves contacting the composition with an aqueous liquid stream to give a liquid solution of acrylic acid, accompanying product, and water. The water then forms an azeotrope with an entrainer, which is added to the solution. Distillation then separates the solution into an overhead product containing the azeotrope and a bottom product containing acrylic acid and accompanying product. The overhead product is separated into water and entrainer and the bottom product is separated in a distillation column into acrylic acid and accompanying product. The process provides a way to remove high- and low-boiling products with a small number of distillation columns.

Abstract

A process for producing an absorbent polymer structure (Pa) by treating the outer portion of an untreated absorbent polymer structure (Pu1). The process includes the step of bringing the outer portion of the untreated absorbent polymer structure (Pu1) into contact with an aqueous solution including at least one chemical cross-linker and at least one inorganic compound in dispersed colloidal form. The process also includes the step of heating the absorbent polymer structure, of which the outer portion has been brought into contact with the aqueous solution, at a temperature within a range from about 40 to about 300° C., so that the outer portion of the absorbent polymer structure is more strongly cross-linked in comparison to the inner portion and the inorganic compound is at least partly immobilized in the outer portion of the absorbent polymer structure.
