Abstract

An orthopedic compression device comprises an outer shaft portion having a threaded outer distal end and having an inner cannulation extending from an opening in a proximal end towards an inner distal end, the inner cannulation having a proximal region; a head portion, the head portion having a distal end portion with a geometry keyed to the proximal region of the cannulation of the first shaft to allow rotation of the head portion to drive rotation of the outer shaft portion, the head portion including an inner channel; and an inner shaft portion. The inner shaft portion is formed from a superelastic material and has a stop at a proximal end thereof. The stop engages a stop surface formed within the head portion when the inner shaft portion extends through the inner channel. The inner shaft portion is coupled to the outer shaft portion such that the inner shaft portion elongates and is placed into tension upon separation of the head portion and outer shaft portion.

Abstract

Apparatus and methods are described for use in securing a first bone relative to a second bone using a pair of surgical staples or, alternatively, a surgical staple and a bone screw. When a pair of staples are used, one of the legs of one of the staples may pass between the legs of the another of the staples. When a staple and a bone screw are used, the bone screw may pass between the legs of the staple. A guide tool can be used during the drilling of the holes for the legs of the staples or the legs of the staple and a bone screw. The guide tool provides guides for drilling guide holes for the staples or for the screw and staple. The guides can be fixed relative to each other during drilling of the guide holes.

Abstract

A sensor for monitoring wetness in a diaper or other absorbent article includes a housing that attaches to the absorbent article. The sensor may include inner and outer housing portions that capture an edge of the absorbent article between the housings. The sensor may include contacts that electrically connect with a pair of contact strips embedded in the absorbent article. The distance between the embedded strips may vary depending on the size of the absorbent article. The sensor may include multiple pairs of contacts that are spaced apart to match the distance between the contact strips for the variously sized absorbent articles. In this way, depending on the pair of contacts connected to the contact strips, the sensor may indicate the size of the absorbent article. The sensor may have a housing with a cavity and a lid that closes the cavity. The lid may be secured with a latch.

Abstract

A sterile drape can be used to cover a C-arm imaging machine used during a medical procedure. In some configurations, the drape includes a detector body cover, a C-arm body cover, and an elastic banding. The detector body cover can be positioned around a detector of the imaging machine. The C-arm body cover can include a tunnel portion that is positioned to surround a portion of the C-arm extending away from the detector. The elastic banding can extend about a perimeter of a junction between the detector body cover and the C-arm body cover. The elastic banding can provide a biasing force that draws the junction between the detector body cover and the C-arm body cover closed.

Abstract

A device for cleaning medical implements is disclosed, in particular a device for cleaning vascular or other fluid access sites. The device includes a cap having an opening to receive an access site. The cap may be used in the following manner: A healthcare worker may, with gloved hands, open the cap packaging and place the cap over the port of a medical implement to be cleaned. The healthcare worker may wipe the site by either applying a turning motion or by simply pushing the cap onto the port. The cap could then remain secured in place by threads other mechanisms. A cap in place on a medical implement may be a positive indication that a desired site of the medical implement is clean. The cap may include a disinfecting substance.

Abstract

Disclosed is plate insertion tool useful with bone plates having a body and a pair of retainers, such as facing, inwardly extending fingers, for clamping a bone plate therebetween, and a pusher movable relative to the body between a fully disengaged position and a fully engaged position, the pusher in use engaging a shoulder of the compression plate. When the pusher is in an engaged position, the legs of the plate are temporarily tensioned by bending the legs away from the body of the plate. The body of the tool includes a pivot joint about which said pusher pivots. The tool may be used to temporarily tension the legs of the plate prior to insertion into holes in a bone.

Abstract

A nebulizer is provided to atomize a liquid medication for rapid delivery of an aerosol spray to a user via inhalation. The nebulizer includes a jar having a compressed gas passage. A jet cooperates with the jar and has a jet orifice through which the liquid medication and the compressed gas are discharged to form an aerosol flow. The cap is connected to the jar to define an inner chamber. The cap includes an entrainment port for ambient room air, and a chimney in fluid communication with the entrainment port and the inner chamber. A deflector base having an impingement member is located adjacent to the entrainment chimney and is spaced below an opening thereof by a predetermined distance to provide a flow of the ambient room air to be entrained in the aerosol flow in order to enhance nebulization speed while maintaining a desired aerosol particle size.

Abstract

A removable manifold for a medical/surgical waste collection system. The manifold is dimensioned to be mounted to a receiver integral with the system. The manifold includes at least one tube through which waste is drawn into a manifold cage. The tube extends through an inlet port into a void space internal to the manifold cage at an angle. The tube exits the manifold cage and is centered along an axis that is off center to the longitudinal axis of the manifold cage where it engages a complementary valve internal to the receiver. The valve regulates flow between the receiver and the down line components of the waste collection system. The valve is normally closed. When the manifold is fitted to the receiver the tube engages the valve and rotation of the manifold moves the valve to the open position allowing fluid flow from the manifold and receiver to the downstream components of the system.

Abstract

A tray (100) for accommodating a coiled medical device, such as a catheter assembly (700), includes a first compartment (101), a second compartment (102), and a third compartment (103). The catheter assembly (700) and devices associated with a catheterization procedure, such as syringes (701,702) containing sterile water and lubricating jelly and a specimen container (703) can be disposed within the tray. Printed instructions (1001) can be included with the tray (100). One or more layers of wrap material (2200) can be folded about the tray (100) to enclose the tray (100) and other items, such as an additional layer of wrap material (2701), packaged liquid hand sanitizer (2401), and packaged gloves (2402). When a health care services provider (3101) unfolds the wrap material, the same can be used to create a sterile field beneath a patient (3201).

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and system for aseptically filling of flexible packages containing dry cloth. Such a method may include a first stage that is performed in a non-sterile environment. The first stage may include cutting a first substantially dry cloth to a predetermined size; inserting the first cloth into a flexible package; sealing a first end of the flexible package; and sterilizing the flexible package. The method may also include a second stage performed in a sterile environment. The second stage may include filling the flexible package with a medical solution such that the substantially dry cloth absorbs at least a portion of the medical solution; and sealing the open end of the flexible package.
