Abstract

A single screw compressor comprises a main rotor and at least one gate rotor, a casing for the main rotor having a discharge port at a discharge end of the casing, and a slide slidable within a bore in the casing adjacent the main rotor. The slide has a cut-out (6) between first (2) and second (4) sealing parts of the slide, the slide is slidable between a high volume ratio position where the cut-out (6) is within the casing and provides a path to the discharge port, and a low volume ratio position where the slide is beyond the discharge end of the casing to provide a fixed discharge path in the bore of the casing.

Abstract

A compressor includes a main rotor (4), formed substantially as a cylinder and rotatable about an axis of the cylinder, the main rotor having helical flutes, and a casing. An inlet port admits gas into a first part of the flutes at a first pressure. A star-shaped sealing gate rotor (12) meshes with the flutes and seals the first part of the flutes from a second part of the flutes. A first star-shaped compression gate rotor (6) meshes with the flutes in the first part for compressing the gas to a second pressure, higher than the first pressure. A duct feeds the gas at the second pressure to the second part of the flutes. A second star-shaped compression gate rotor (10) meshes with the flutes in the second part for compressing the gas to a third pressure, higher than the second pressure. The first and second parts of the flutes are formed by first and second angular sectors (2, 8), defined with respect to the axis of the main rotor (4). The second sector (8), between the sealing gate rotor (12) and the second compression rotor (10), has a smaller volume than the first sector (2).

Abstract

An oil/gas separator comprises a duct (20) having an inlet (13) for receiving an oil/gas mixture, the duct having an inner surface extending at least partially in a horizontal direction and providing a bend (32) or series of bends. The duct (20) provides at least partial separation of the oil/gas mixture, in use, by both gravitational and centrifugal oil collection onto the inner surface. The duct is arranged to deliver gas and collected oil into a centrifuging cylinder (22) providing an internal impingement surface, an upper gas outlet (30), and a lower oil outlet (24). The cylinder (22) has an internal diameter of less than 180 mm. Thus, the oil separator of this invention is in effect formed by the pipework that is required to recirculate refrigerant.

Abstract

A discharge muffler for a compressor is constructed as an inner duct extending inside an outer duct, the inner duct being open at each end and the outer duct being open only at the muffler inlet. The inner duct has a plurality of holes communicating with the outer duct, at least two of the holes being at different distances from the muffler outlet.

Abstract

A ducted separator in a compressor-based cooling assembly is connected to an oil/gas outlet of the compressor. The ducted separator is a pipe with at least one bend in it which collects oil in a manner which can achieve 98% oil carry over efficiency. The ducted separator may optionally be connected to a second phase separator such as a centrifugal cylinder. In that case, the height of the centrifugal cylinder can be significantly reduced compared with conventional arrangements. Alternatively, a simpler impingement surface such as one or more baffles may be used as the second phase separator or just a collection chamber.
