Abstract

A method of solvent reuse during the alkaline hydrolysis of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into terephthalic acid (TPA) and ethylene glycol (EG) is described, the method comprising in the following order the steps of: a) contacting PET with a catalyst in a virgin solution comprising at least one solvent in the presence of a base to provide a first reaction mixture containing a first solid phase and a first liquid phase; b) separating the first liquid phase comprising ethylene glycol, the at least one solvent and the base from the first solid phase of the first reaction mixture; c) recovering the first liquid phase to receive a first recovered solution comprising ethylene glycol; d) contacting PET with a catalyst in a second solution comprising at least one solvent in the presence of a base to provide a second reaction mixture containing a second solid phase and a second liquid phase, wherein the second solution comprises the first recovered solution; e) separating the second liquid phase comprising ethylene glycol, the at least one solvent and the base from the second solid phase of the second reaction mixture; f) recovering the second liquid phase to receive a second recovered solution comprising ethylene glycol.

A method of extracting ethylene glycol from an initial liquid solution comprising water, ethanol, ethylene glycol (EG), and at least one salt is described, the method comprising the steps of: a. removing the at least one salt from the initial liquid solution using an ion exchange resin obtaining a first solution; b. performing a first distillation step in a first distillation column with the first solution at a temperature between 100-180 °C extracting water and ethanol on top of the first distillation column and obtaining a second solution containing ethylene glycol and the rest of the first solution on the bottom of the first distillation column; and c. performing a second distillation step with the second solution containing ethylene glycol at a temperature between 200-290 °C obtaining purified ethylene glycol on the top of the second distillation column and the rest of the second solution on the bottom of the second distillation column.

The invention relates to a method for preparing crystalline purified terephthalic acid (PTA) with an average crystal size of approx. 50-150 microns, comprising, in the following order, the steps of: a) providing an aqueous PTA solution of purified metalated salt of terephthalic acid (pH 7); b) heating the solution to a maximum crystallization temperature; c) adjusting the solution to a pH of 5; d) subjecting the solution to a cooling-heating cycle to obtain growing PTA crystals, wherein the solution is cooled to a minimum crystallization temperature and subsequently heated to the maximum crystallization temperature; e) at the maximum crystallization temperature adjusting the pH of the PTA solution to 1 – 3 for full precipitation of crystalline PTA, and f) filtering the PTA solution to collect crystalline PTA; g) washing the filtered crystals with cold water; h) drying the crystals.
