Abstract

A system and method of positioning a patient residing on a sheet located on a mattress includes moving to a first position opposing engagement members of a clamp, inserting a first side edge of the sheet between the opposing engagement members, moving the opposing engagement members to a second position so as to grasp the first side edge of the sheet, and causing a pulling device to pull the clamp and thus the sheet upwards so as to at least partially reposition the patient from an initial position towards a second side of the mattress. The sheet has opposing longitudinal side edges that may be retained by retainers located along corresponding opposing longitudinal first and second sides of the mattress.

Abstract

A patient repositioning system (10) for pulling a patient toward a head end (30) of a bed (12) includes a mattress (14), two rows of spaced retainers (116) along the sides of the mattress (14), a sheet (16), a pulling device (242), a housing (214"'), and a drive mechanism (710) that includes a manually operable hand crank (714) which selectively couples with the pulling device (242) located in the housing (214"'). With the side edges of the sheet (16) held by the two rows of retainers (116), and with the hand crank (714) coupled to the housing (214"'), manual operation of the hand crank (714) causes the pulling device (242) to pull the sheet (16) and the patient supported thereon toward a head end of the mattress (14) so as to reposition the patient relative to the mattress (14) and to pull the sheet (16) into the housing (214"'). The sheet (16) is of sufficient length to accommodate multiple repositionings of the patient.

Abstract

A patient repositioning system (10) for a bariatric bed (12) includes a mattress (14) having a head end (54), a foot end (52), and an upper surface (46), a sheet (16) residing on the upper surface (46), a drive mechanism (22) operatively coupled to the sheet (16) and adapted to pull the sheet (16) toward the head end (54), and a housing (20) which holds the drive mechanism (22). The mattress (14) further includes a body portion (114) and at least one operatively coupled attached side bolster (1 12a) located along one longitudinal side (62a) of the body portion (1 14), thereby to widen the upper surface (46) of the mattress (14) so as to accommodate standard bariatric dimensions. Alternatively, instead of a side bolster (112a), the invention contemplates the use of transition pieces (136a, 136b) near the head end (54), a rotatable housing (20), or a telescopically expandable/contractable housing (20), thereby to expand to accommodate bariatric dimensions and contract to reduced dimensions so as to fit through a standard size doorway.

Abstract

A patient monitoring and repositioning system (10a) includes a mattress (26), a sheet (16) residing on an upper surface of the mattress (26), a housing (29) containing a drive mechanism (28), and a sensor (20) adapted to sense a position of a patient (22) resting on the mattress (26). The drive mechanism (28) is operable to pull the sheet (16) and thereby pull the patient (22) resting thereon. The housing (29) receives the sheet (16) through a slot (54). In the event that the patient (22) is in an undesirable position on the mattress (26) as detected by the sensor (20), a controller (24) directs the drive mechanism (28) to pull the sheet (16) so as to pull the patient thereon from the undesirable position to a desirable, predetermined position. The controller (24) may direct the drive mechanism (28) automatically or indicate the undesirable position to a caregiver so that the caregiver may direct the drive mechanism (28) accordingly.

Abstract

A patient positioning device for restoring a patient to a desired position in a hospital bed. An example patient positioning device may include a flexible track positioned along each of the lateral edges of a sleep surface and extending substantially the entire length of the sleep surface, a sheet including beaded edges for slidably engaging the tracks such that the sheet spans between the first track and the second track on the sleep surface, and/or a drive mechanism located proximate a head end of the sleep surface and configured to pull the sheet towards the head end of the bed.

Abstract

A sheet receiver (18"') for a patient repositioning system (10) includes a housing (714) adapted to be supported at a first end of a bed deck (22) and a pulling device (742) located primarily within an internal compartment (240) of the housing (714). The housing (714) has an access door (736) adapted to open and to close so as to provide access to the internal compartment (240) via an opening (700), and the housing (714) also has an elongated slot (716) extending along a first end thereof, and spaced from the opening (700). A connector (265) has an innermost end (704) secured to the pulling device (742) within the internal compartment (240) and an outermost end (703) removably attachable to a sheet (16') located on a mattress (14) supported on the bed deck (22). The connector (265) spans substantially the length of the slot (716) and may include at least one window (709a) near the innermost end (704), to facilitate cleaning of the internal compartment (24). The housing (714) includes an impeding structure (812) which prevents the inadvertent insertion of the connector (265) and/or the sheet (16') into the internal compartment (240) via the opening (700).
