Abstract

A pre-oxidation heat-treatment method to heat treat nickel-base alloys containing, in weight percent, 1.8 wt. % minimum aluminum and 10 wt. % minimum chromium is disclosed that can provide an aluminum oxide scale having a thickness of at least 100 nanometers (nm) that contains little or no chromium oxide (Cr2O3), nickel oxide (NiO), titanium oxide (TiO2), silicon oxide (SiO2) or mixed oxides. The method involves heating a workpiece made from an alloy in a furnace containing a flowing argon atmosphere at a pressure of at least 500 microns, and at a temperature of 1400° F. to 2150° F. until a continuous scale of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) is formed on at least one surface of the workpiece. The flowing argon atmosphere in the pre-oxidation heat-treatment method should contain less than 0.1 vol. % oxygen content, and the gas flux is at least 1 mL/min·cm2.

The alloy preferably contains 18.47 to 20.78 wt. % chromium, 19.24 to 20.87 wt. % molybdenum, 0.08 to 0.62 wt. % aluminum, less than 0.76 wt. % manganese, less than 2.10 wt. % iron, less than 0.56 wt. % copper, less than 0.14 wt. % silicon, up to 0.17 wt. % titanium, less than 0.013 wt. % carbon, and the balance nickel.

Abstract

Ni-Cr-Co-Mo-Al based alloys are disclosed which contain 15 to 20 wt.% chromium, 9.5 to 20 wt.% cobalt, 7.25 to 10 wt.% molybdenum, 2.72 to 3.9 wt.% aluminum, along with typical impurities, a tolerance for up to 10.5 wt.% iron, minor element additions and a balance of nickel. These alloys are readily fabricable, have high creep strength, and excellent oxidation resistance up to as high as 2100°F (1149°C). This combination of properties is useful for a variety of gas turbine engine components, including, for example, combustors.

Abstract

An ingot mold has a body having an open top, a bottom with an opening, and a longitudinal cavity passing through the body. The cavity is defined by a cavity wall extending from the top to the bottom. The cavity wall has a recess adjacent the opening in the bottom of the body. A ceramic insert is positioned within the cavity such that the sidewalls of the ceramic insert are in the recess in the cavity wall.
