The invention relates to an extruder comprising a cylinder and an endless screw, said extruder being provided with a cooling system formed by the arrangement of an expanded sheet metal sleeve (3) on the outer side thereof. A flow region of the cooling system is defined on one side by a surface of the cylinder (1) and on the other side by the sheet metal sleeve. The sheet metal sleeve is formed in a bulging manner such that a plurality of bulges (5) respectively defines part of the flow region for the coolant. Once the sheet metal sleeve has been joined to the cylinder, it is shaped by a pressurised fluid to form the interlinked flow regions. The bulging design of the temperature-controlling region and the circulation of a coolant therein on the outer surface of the cylinder assists the thermal process control during the laser cladding.
