Abstract
Provided herein is a method of direct lithium extraction in which lithium ions are removed from a lithium-containing brine by adsorption onto a lithium-selective adsorbent, followed by eluting the adsorbed lithium. The process described herein is a discontinuous simulated moving bed process, in which brines or eluants are routed through a plurality of zones or columns, in turn, to reproduce the effect of lithium extraction via a simulated moving bed system. The discontinuous moving bed system, however, is based on a more efficient design that provides significant economies in resource use as well as construction and operation costs.

Abstract
A rapidly-expanding and -curing geopolymer formulation includes a liquid aqueous phase with silicate, aluminate and/or silico-aluminate precursors, an inorganic base, a monosaccharide and/or disaccharide, and a water-soluble peroxy compound. The saccharide and peroxy compound react spontaneously and rapidly in strongly alkaline conditions, producing an expanding gas and exothermic heat of reaction that drives at least an initial cure of the geopolymer formulation. The resulting foamed geopolymer formulation can be used in a variety of building and construction applications, as well as and others.

Abstract
Provided are a process and apparatus for lithium ion extraction. The process includes passing a lithium-containing brine through a lithium-adsorbent, then passing a desorption media through the lithium-adsorbent at a temperature above 40°C to produce a lithium-enriched eluent. The lithium concentration of the eluent is further increased by passing it through a nanofiltration membrane and a reverse osmosis membrane. Preferably, the eluent is passed through these membranes more than once at a temperature above 40°C. The process is energy-efficient, because it is conducted entirely at temperatures above 40°C. Accordingly, there is no need to decrease the temperature of the lithium-enriched eluent before passing it through the nanofiltration membrane and the reverse osmosis membrane. Moreover, there is no need to increase the temperature of the nanofiltration reverse osmosis permeate before passing it through the lithium-adsorbent as a desorption media, nor is there a need to increase the temperature of the enriched lithium stream before lithium precipitation.

Abstract
Polygonal elastomeric barrier sheets have tapered edges on at least two adjacent sides. At least one of the tapered edges is made by cutting the elastomeric barrier sheet along a cut line at an angle of at most 15° from the plane of the sheet. The elastomeric barrier sheet is supported during the cutting step to prevent distortion due to pressure of the cutting blade. The elastomeric barrier sheet can be supported from above, below or from both above and below, and can be supported on each side of the cut line. The polygonal barrier sheets so produced are useful in building and construction to seal gaps between structural elements such as expansion or control joints in a building or around functional elements such as a window or door inserted into a wall.

Abstract
The present invention provides a batch or semi-batch method and system for treating a feed solution. A hyperfiltration system is suitable to switch between two modes: a recirculation step wherein the retentate stream from hyperfiltration membrane elements is recycled and a flush step that displaces a retentate stream to an outlet. The hyperfiltration system includes an array design optimized to increase the flush efficiency during the flush step by equalizing the hydraulic residence time of different flow paths through a pressure vessel array. The substantially equal hydraulic residence times result in more uniform displacement of solute from the system, lower over-all flush volumes to displace accumulated solutes, and minimal variation in the age distribution of solute that accumulates within the system.

Abstract
A multi-element filtration vessel contains multiple filtration elements. The elements have cylindrical housings and an annular header. At least a portion of the annular header surrounds the cylindrical housings at one end. The annular header has a periodically varying cross-sectional width and thickness such that the annular header has alternating thinner and thicker regions. The elements are packed with thinner sections of the header aligned. This allows for close packing of the elements without unduly compromising the mechanical strength of the headers.

Abstract
Gaps between adjacent members in a building construction are sealed by applying a self-adhering barrier sheet to the adjacent members to span the gap. The self-adhering barrier sheet includes a flexible sheet of a barrier material. The flexible sheet has opposing edges, of which at least one is tapered. A pressure sensitive adhesive is applied to at least a portion of at least one major surface of the flexible sheet. The edges of the self-adhering barrier sheet are adhered to the adjacent structural elements by means of the pressure sensitive adhesive. The pressure sensitive adhesive has a thickness equal to or less than the maximum thickness of the flexible sheet. Where two self adhering barrier sheets overlap at an angle on a substrate, the tapered edge of the underlying sheet allows a smooth transition for the overlapping sheet, preventing the formation of an open gap between the barrier sheets and the substrate where air and moisture can penetrate.

Abstract
A water treatment system (2) comprising a pressure vessel (10), vertically aligned separation elements (30) within the vessel each having at least one porous UF or MF membrane, feed fluid passageways (36), a permeate fluid passageway (40), a concentrate removal port (16), and a biocontactor (50) within the vessel that has biogrowth surfaces surrounding flow paths through the biocontactor. The flow paths have a median ratio of surface area to volume which exceeds 15 cm"1. The pressure vessel also contains a pressure plate (70) with holes (72) which separates the vessel into two chambers, a first chamber (74) containing membrane elements (30) and a second chamber (76) that contains the biocontactor (50). A sealing means (80 x) contacting the pressure plate prevents fluid flow between the first chamber and second chamber except through the porous membranes.
