Abstract

A rapidly-expanding and -curing geopolymer formulation includes a liquid aqueous phase with silicate, aluminate and/or silico-aluminate precursors, an inorganic base, a monosaccharide and/or disaccharide, and a water-soluble peroxy compound. The saccharide and peroxy compound react spontaneously and rapidly in strongly alkaline conditions, producing an expanding gas and exothermic heat of reaction that drives at least an initial cure of the geopolymer formulation. The resulting foamed geopolymer formulation can be used in a variety of building and construction applications, as well as and others.

Abstract

A water treatment system comprising a pressure vessel, vertically aligned separation elements within the vessel each having at least one porous UF or MF membrane, feed fluid passageways, a permeate fluid passageway, a concentrate removal port, and a biocontactor within the vessel that has biogrowth surfaces surrounding flow paths through the biocontactor. The flow paths have a median ratio of surface area to volume which exceeds 15 cm−1. The pressure vessel also contains a pressure plate with holes which separates the vessel into two chambers, a first chamber containing membrane elements and a second chamber that contains the biocontactor. A sealing means contacting the pressure plate prevents fluid flow between the first chamber and second chamber except through the porous membranes.

Abstract

Polygonal elastomeric barrier sheets have tapered edges on at least two adjacent sides. At least one of the tapered edges is made by cutting the elastomeric barrier sheet along a cut line at an angle of at most 15° from the plane of the sheet. The elastomeric barrier sheet is supported during the cutting step to prevent distortion due to pressure of the cutting blade. The elastomeric barrier sheet can be supported from above, below or from both above and below, and can be supported on each side of the cut line. The polygonal barrier sheets so produced are useful in building and construction to seal gaps between structural elements such as expansion or control joints in a building or around functional elements such as a window or door inserted into a wall.

Abstract

[Summary] [Summary] [Problem] To provide an attachment structure with which a heat insulating material is easily and simply attached to a construction on the ground. [Summary] [Problem] To provide an attachment structure with which a heat insulating material is easily and simply attached to a construction on the ground. [Means of overcoming the problem] An attachment structure for a heat insulating material 10 installed on a foundation F having a building fixed on an upper portion thereof comprises a wall plate 15 which maintains the heat insulating material in a state of being in proximity to and facing an outside surface Fs, rising from ground E, of the foundation, and an attaching device 20 which positions and retains the wall plate in such a way as to be capable of sliding in a direction parallel to the foundation, wherein: the wall plate is formed as a structure that is positioned on a rear surface side of the heat insulating material with respect to the foundation, and that maintains the facing state of the heat insulating material by sandwiching the same against the outside surface of the foundation; the attaching device includes an upper retaining portion 21 which retains an upper portion of the wall plate on an upper portion of the foundation in a non-detachable manner, and a lower retaining portion 23 which retains a lower portion of the wall plate on the outside surface of the foundation so as to be non-detachable in a separating direction; the lower retaining portion is formed as a receiving structure which receives the lower portion of the wall plate in a placed state; and the upper retaining portion is formed as a structure which faces a rear surface side, with respect to the heat insulating material, of the upper portion of the wall plate, and which restricts movement of the upper portion of the wall plate in the separating direction.

Abstract

A multi-element filtration vessel included spaced beams for supporting and/or aligning filtration elements from below. The filtration elements have bottom ends adapted to rest upon adjacent support beams and also to extend between them to form a cavity that can capture feed fluid and an aeration gas and conduct it into the filtration element. In another aspect, a multi-element filtration vessel has removable aerators mounted on a projection on the wall of the filtration vessel.

Abstract

A two-part polyurethane adhesive exhibits excellent adhesion to low surface energy substrates such as polypropylene. The adhesive consists of a polyol component and a polyisocyanate component that are combined and cured to form the adhesive bond. The polyol component is characterized in containing a monoalcohol that has a molecular weight of 100 to 2000. The presence of the monoalcohol promotes strong bonding and a cohesive failure mode that is preferred in vehicular applications.

Abstract

Gaps between adjacent members in a building construction are sealed by applying a self-adhering barrier sheet to the adjacent members to span the gap. The self-adhering barrier sheet includes a flexible sheet of a barrier material. The flexible sheet has opposing edges, of which at least one is tapered. A pressure sensitive adhesive is applied to at least a portion of at least one major surface of the flexible sheet. The edges of the self-adhering barrier sheet are adhered to the adjacent structural elements by means of the pressure sensitive adhesive. The pressure sensitive adhesive has a thickness equal to or less than the maximum thickness of the flexible sheet. Where two self adhering barrier sheets overlap at an angle on a substrate, the tapered edge of the underlying sheet allows a smooth transition for the overlapping sheet, preventing the formation of an open gap between the barrier sheets and the substrate where air and moisture can penetrate.

Abstract

Quaternary ammonium tribromides and quaternary phosphonium tribromides are recovered from an organic solvent by washing with an aqueous hydrazine solution. The hydrazine reacts to form nitrogen, hydrobromic acid and a quaternary ammonium or quaternary phosphonium monobromide. The hydrobromic acid and quaternary ammonium or quaternary phosphonium migrate to the aqueous phase, thereby effecting the removal of the tribromides from the organic solvent. The hydrobromic acid can be neutralized with a quaternary ammonium or quaternary phosphonium hydroxide to produce a quaternary ammonium or quaternary phosphonium monobromide. The monobromides produced can be reacted with elemental bromine to regenerate a tribromide brominating agent.

Abstract

The teachings herein relate to new compositions for thermal interface materials that provide improved thermal conductivity without requiring filler materials that are expensive or abrasive. The improved thermal conductivity is achieved using a combination of increased filler loading, selection of a filler having abroad particle size distribution, and selection of filler that is non-abrasive. In order to achieve maximum thermal conductivity, the combination of the liquid matrix material and the filler preferably are chosen to avoid forming bonds between filler particles. Such bonds can also be avoided by including a surface modifier that modifies the surface of the filler particles.

The thermal interface material preferably has a specific gravity of about 4.0 or less, about 3.0 or less, about 2.5 or less, or about 2.4 or less. The thermal interface material may be a two-part composition. In order to achieve maximum thermal conductivity, each part preferably includes a liquid matrix material and dispersed filler. Upon mixing, the first and second parts may react to increase this viscosity (e.g., by polymerizing and/or cross-linking). The first part preferably includes a carbamate-containing compound that reacts with a carbamate-reactive compound, which is preferably in the second component. The first part preferably is substantially or entirely free of isocyanate containing compounds, as these compounds may reduce the shelf life stability of the composition. The carbamate-reactive compound preferably is a polyamine, including two or more spaced apart amine groups. The first part, the second part, or both, preferably includes a catalyst for accelerating the reaction between the carbamate-containing compound and the carbamate-reactive compound.
