Abstract

An improved process for the preparation of Lamotrigine of Formula (I) and their intermediates wherein an intermediate, 2,3- dichloro benzoic acid of Formula (III) is prepared in single step. The process for the preparation of Lamotrigine comprises cyano-de-halogenation of 2,3-dichloro benzoyl chloride of Formula (IV) with a metal cyanide and a phase transfer catalyst.
