Abstract

The invention relates to an engine with side valves including: at least one cylinder (2) which leads into a combustion chamber (3), a piston (1) extending inside said cylinder and engaging with at least one crankshaft (9); at least one intake duct (5a) and/or exhaust duct (5b) which leads into the combustion chamber (3) and is alternately sealed and opened by at least one intake valve (4a) and/or exhaust valve (4b). The intake and/or exhaust ducts lead into the combustion chamber (3) from above, with valves including a valve face arranged in an upper portion of the combustion chamber (3) such as to be movable alternately between a top sealing position and a bottom opening position. The engine offers reduced consumption, low hydrocarbon emissions, a high compression rate, good permeability at the intake and at the exhaust, good compactness and a reduced cost. The engine can include two counter-rotating crankshafts providing a low level of vibrations, with no gas-dynamic torque, making same suitable for range-extending applications for electric vehicles.
