The invention relates to an apparatus and a method for monitoring a milking process. By providing and using a monitoring element, various operating scenarios, in particular the undesired removal of a milking cup during the milking process, can be detected and corresponding measures for preventing contamination of the milking cluster and harvested milk can be initiated.
