Abstract

An armor system for protecting a vehicle from a projectile and employing the use of an insensitive reactive material as the primary means of disturbing the projectile is disclosed. The armor system includes a plurality of modules. Some modules may include a bag, wherein each module shares at least one seal with an adjacent module, and a material contained in the module and capable of being detonated. By manipulating the sensitivity of the reactive material, the Shockwave interaction with the chemical energy can be optimized for design packaging and defeating a threat. A transparent or opaque system provides multi-hit capability against chemical energy weapons or high velocity projectiles that maintains a narrow profile and provides a clear field of view. The reactive armor system requires no special energy source or detection system to provide protection from shaped-charge threats or RPGs thus minimizing any potential for failure as opposed to DAS.

A seal system for a compartment having a barrier is disclosed, the barrier having an interior and a cover for an aperture disposed in the barrier, the cover opening outwardly relative to the interior. The seal system has a first seal extending from the cover that is disposed on an exterior of the compartment and a second seal extending from the cover. The seal system also has a structural assembly attached to an exterior of the barrier. The present disclosure is directed to a wheel for a land vehicle. The wheel may include a mounting flange configured to secure the wheel to the land vehicle and a rim. The wheel may further include a hollow tire configured to be mounted about the rim and wherein the hollow tire and the rim define a space. The wheel may still further include one or more high velocity of shock balls disposed within the space. The wheel may include an internal tire support having an inside wall and an outside wall and one or more high velocity of shock elements extending axially across the support. Abstract

In one aspect, the present disclosure is directed to a system for protecting a vehicle from a mine, the mine being located at or underneath the surface on which the vehicle is traveling, the mine upon detonation yielding ejecta having an expected vertically upward trajectory, and the vehicle having a hull with an underbody. The system has a first layer of material disposed outside of the underbody, the first layer of material including a sheet-like base disposed in a direction substantially parallel to the underbody, and a protrusion that narrows in width as it extends away from the sheet-like base in a direction opposing the expected trajectory of the ejecta, the protrusion narrowing to an apex. The system also has a second layer including a material having a Shockwave transmission velocity that is higher than a Shockwave transmission velocity of the material of the first layer, the second layer substantially covering the sheet-like base of the first layer. The system further has an exterior layer substantially covering the first and second layers, the exterior layer having an exterior surface that faces away from the underbody and toward the expected trajectory of the ejecta. The exterior layer extends at an angle, relative to the sheet-like base of the first layer, from the apex of the protrusion of the first layer to at least one portion of the sheet-like base of the first layer that is disposed away from the protrusion.

Abstract

An armor system for defeating rocket propelled grenade-type missiles and/or high velocity jets created by shaped charges directed at a vehicle includes a grid layer such as a net and/or an array of slats or bars ("RPG") spaced from an outer surface of the vehicle by support members. The grid layer has a characteristic mesh size or bar/slat spacing to disrupt the missile firing mechanism. The system also has a shaped layer having a plurality of tapered members formed from a fiber- reinforced material, the tapered members positioned between the grid layer and the vehicle outer surface and having respective apex ends proximate the distant the grid layer and base ends, the tapered members defining with adjacent tapered members a plurality of depressions opening in a direction to receive an incoming conical portion of an unexploded RPG-type missile, or a jet emanating from an exploded RPG or other anti-armor device, and a layer of fiber-reinforced material abutting the base ends of the tapered members. The system may further include reactive elements disposed on surfaces of the tapered members defining the depressions to deflect impinging jets. The system may still further include one or more metal armor layers and one or more additional fiber-reinforced material layers disposed between the shaped fiber-reinforced material layer and the vehicle surface.

The armor system has a modular armor subsystem configured to be mounted exterior to the vehicle hull. The modular armor subsystem also has a second intermediate sheet-like layer, the layer located between the first intermediate sheet-like layer and the hull, and a dispersion area located between the first and the second intermediate sheet- like layers. Abstract

The disclosed armor system for protecting a vehicle from high energy projectiles includes a leading layer, relative to the projectile trajectory, positioned exterior to the hull; a first plurality of sheet-like layers of a low density material positioned between the leading layer and the hull; and a second plurality of sheet-like high strength metal layers positioned between the leading layer and the hull. The individual ones of the first plurality of high strength metal layers are positioned alternating with, and to the rear of, individual ones of the second plurality of low density material layers. The leading layer can be one of a sheet-like metal layer, a metalicized grid layer, and the outer-most layer of the first plurality of low density materials layers. The materials of the high strength metal layers may be selected from high strength steel and high strength aluminum, and the materials of the low density material may be selected from low density polypropylene composites and R-Glass composites.

Abstract

An armor system for defeating a solid projectile has an outer armor plate, an interior armor plate, and an inner armor plate, the plates positioned approximately parallel to one another and also displaced from one another along the projectile trajectory to form a first dispersion space between the outer armor plate and the interior armor plate, and a second dispersion space between the interior armor plate and the inner armor plate. Upstream surfaces of the interior and inner metal armor plates each have a metal coating of a composition selected to friction weld or bond with the metal of the adjacent upstream metal armor plate, and, when positioned to first engage the projectile, the outer metal armor plate has on its upstream surface a metal coating of a composition selected to friction weld or bond with the metal of the projectile.

An armor system for defeating a solid projectile having an exterior rigid armor plate associated with a fiber-reinforced sheet armor affixed to the interior surface of the exterior armor plate, an interior armor plate, and an inner armor plate displaced from one another to form a first dispersion space between the sheet of self-bonded polymer and the interior armor plate. Abstract

A blast-resistant armored land vehicle that may include a monocoque body comprised of sheet material with the bottom portion of the vehicle being substantially V-shaped. The apex of the V is substantially parallel with the centerline of the vehicle with the tip of the V having a radius of approximately 1-4 inches. The angle of the V may be approximately 115°-130°. The vehicle has a ground clearance of greater than 30 inches. The vehicle further includes an engine detachably affixed within the body, a transmission connected to the engine, a transfer case connected to the transmission having a front output shaft and a rear output shaft. The transfer case may be located at the approximate the fore and aft center of the vehicle and may be enclosed within a blast resistant that includes sheet material above the transfer case. The drive train may be connected to the engine and may be detachably affixed to the body.
