Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for producing products with molecules or macromolecules attached thereto and apparatus for carrying out this method. The method comprises the steps of: (a) generating a plasma at a location separated from the substrate; and (b) contacting the substrate exposed to the plasma with the biological macromolecule. Suitably the macromolecule is a bacteriophage. Thus, products of methods of the invention are for prevention and amelioration of bacterial contamination of the product or materials in contact with said product or products.

Abstract

An intracellular bacterial infection in a plant or animal is treated by administration to a plant cell or animal cell of a particle to which an infectious bacteriophage is covalently attached, wherein the particle is internalized by the cell. Particles with phage attached and compositions comprising the particles are provided. A formulation, for treatment of a bacterial infection, comprises bacteriophage, liquid carrier and adhesive, which dries so that the adhesive adheres the bacteriophage to a surface, one such formulation comprising liquid carrier: 85%-99.98% by weight; bacteriophage: 0.01%-5% by weight; and adhesive: 0.01%-10% by weight.

Abstract

An intracellular bacterial infection in a plant or animal is treated by administration to a plant cell or animal cell of a particle to which an infectious bacteriophage is covalently attached, wherein the particle is internalised by the cell. Particles with phage attached and compositions comprising the particles are provided. A formulation, for treatment of a bacterial infection, comprises bacteriophage, liquid carrier and adhesive, which dries so that the adhesive adheres the bacteriophage to a surface, one such formulation comprising liquid carrier: 85% - 99.98% by weight; bacteriophage: 0.01 % - 5% by weight; and adhesive: 0.01 % - 10% by weight.

Abstract

Bacteriophage are produced in a continuous process comprising maintaining a culture of bacteriophage in a first vessel (16); feeding the culture with bacteria maintained in a second vessel (12a, 12b) in the stationary phase and harvesting bacteriophage from the first vessel (16), wherein the first vessel is operated at a dilution rate in excess of 1 / (bacteriophage lysis time).

Abstract

Plant material has bacteriophage has been attached, wherein the bacteriophage retains infectivity. The plant material includes fruits, vegetables, leaves, stems, flowers, roots, tubers, seedlings and seeds. Plant diseases and animal diseases can be treated. A separate composition comprises a carrier selected from (i) a filament, (ii) a planar material, and (iii) particles and/or beads, and bacteriophage covalently attached thereto, wherein the bacteriophage retains infectivity, useful in treatment or prevention of bacterial infection in a deep wound.
