Abstract

The bipolar plate has, on a steel substrate, an anisotropic nanocrystalline carbon layer which is attached to the substrate via a carbidic interlayer. The carbon atoms of the anisotropic nanocrystalline carbon layer are arranged predominantly in sp2 coordination in graphitic nanocrystallites such that the c axes of the graphitic nanocrystallites are aligned highly parallel to the surface of the substrate. The process for production of the bipolar plate comprises polishing the steel substrate prior to the application of the subsequent layers and then depositing the anisotropic nanocrystalline carbon layer on the substrate surface by a PVD method. Finally, an amorphous outer carbon layer that has formed during the PVD operation is removed from the anisotropic nanocrystalline carbon layer. This simultaneously hydrophilizes and/or functionalizes the surface of the carbon layer.

Abstract

A piston ring has a running surface, an inner surface, a lower ring flank, and an upper ring flank. A recess, extending across the perimeter in the shape of an internal angle, is located at the transition between the inner surface and the upper ring flank. The recess defines a conical first surface and a conical second surface at the piston ring. The first surface lies farther outward, when viewed in the radial direction, and farther above, when viewed in the axial direction, than the second surface. In an axial cross section, a first angle between the axial direction and the first surface lies in the range between 10° and 50°, and a second angle between the radial direction and the second surface lies in the range between 5° and 30°. A piston having a piston ring groove includes a projection on the groove bottom. A combination made from an above-mentioned piston ring and an above-mentioned piston are adapted to one another, so that the projection projects into the recess.

Abstract

The invention relates to a piston ring 1. Said piston ring 1 comprises an annular main body 2 which is preferably open at a butt joint and has a U-shaped cross section, the open side of which points inwards in the radial direction; an annular spring 4 which runs in the axial direction in a meandering manner and prestresses the main body 2 towards the outside in the radial direction; wherein meander loops 5 bear alternately against the limbs 3 of the U-shaped cross section in a section of the annular spring 4 which lies within the main body; and wherein meander loops 6 bear alternately against the radially inwardly pointing edges of the limbs 3 of the U-shaped cross section in a section of the annular spring 4 which protrudes out of the main body 2.

Abstract

The present invention relates to an axially stabilized two-part piston ring (2), comprising a main part (4) with a substantially L-shaped cross-section; which has an outer running surface (12) arranged on a running surface leg (8), and a ring flank piece (10), which together form two legs of the L-shaped cross-section. The piston ring (2) further comprises an axial stabilizing element (6) which is arranged so as to at least partially rest against the ring flank piece (10), said stabilizing element (6) being elastic in the axial direction and said stabilizing element (6) projecting over the running surface leg (12).
