Abstract

A method includes synthesizing pigment in situ in a porous material and includes impregnating the porous material with a first reactant, and subsequently impregnating the porous material with a second reactant to form the pigment in situ. The method is contrasted with applying a pigment to a material via an external surface of the material, where pigment penetration is limited, and the pigment is not protected from environmental hazards such as ultraviolet light. Forming the pigment within the cells of the porous material provides pigmentation throughout the material and protects the pigment over the life of the product.

Abstract

A sealing member for a powder slush molding apparatus includes an elastomeric main body comprising a head portion, an anchor portion, and a neck portion extending between and joining the head portion and the anchor portion. The head portion of the sealing member defines at least one interior channel that is centered on a midline of the elastomeric main body and which has a polygonal sectional shape. The polygonal sectional shape of the at least one interior channel, and its location on the midline, permits the head portion of the sealing member to attain a measure of compressibility that helps limit the force needed to compress the head portion without rendering the sealing member too flexible that it cannot adequately retain its shape. The sealing member is useful in establishing a seal between a shell and a powder box of a powder slush molding apparatus.

Abstract

A door module is equipped with an inflatable bladder configured to move an interior trim panel away from the door and toward a vehicle occupant in the event of a collision. The result is reduced occupant movement, additional absorption of kinetic energy, and distribution of remaining energy over an increased surface area. The bladder can have an accordion-like configuration that unfolds when changing from a deflated state to an inflated state, and more than one bladder can be used to control which portions of the trim panel move relative to each other.

Abstract

Airbag deployment data is collected using a plurality of sensors located along a line of weakening formed in a vehicle interior panel. The sensors are configured to provide information pertinent to separation of adjacent portions of the panel from each other as a function of time at a plurality of locations along the line of weakening. Each sensor is attached to the panel so that the sensor crosses the line. The relative time at which a conductive part of each sensor breaks is recorded and provides useful information about airbag door behavior during airbag deployment.

Abstract

A vehicle interior panel includes a seal between a substrate and an airbag chute and around an opening in the substrate through which the airbag chute is installed. The seal prevents a foam layer from extending into the opening when the foam layer is being molded. The seal is attached to the airbag chute prior to assembly with the substrate and is made from a material that is more flexible than the airbag chute material. The seal can be attached to the airbag chute in a two-shot molding process and spaced from the perimeter of the airbag chute along its back side. During molding of the foam layer, foam expansion pressure acts to improve the function of the seal as a foam barrier.

Abstract

A vehicle interior panel includes pieces held together by a snap joint formed when a protrusion of the outer piece is received by a receptacle of the inner piece. The receptacle is formed by a pair of walls extending from a back side of the inner piece, and the protrusion is received between the pair of walls. Oppositely facing bulges engage with oppositely facing grooves to form the joint. Sidewalls of the bulges also engage with angled sidewalls of the opposite piece to form a robust interlocking joint in which multiple pairs of opposing surfaces are engaged with each other to prevent relative movement of the inner and outer pieces in multiple directions. The features that form the snap joint can be molded as integral parts of the pieces being held together without the need for separate clips or fasteners.

Abstract

A decorative covering for a vehicle interior panel is made from two sheets of material joined together at a seam. The sheets of material have matching alignment features along respective edges to aid in visual alignment during the joining operation. The alignment features are spaced along the edge of a decorative layer, and cutouts are formed along a corresponding edge of an attached backing layer such that each alignment feature is visible through one of the cutouts when viewed from the back side. The cutouts are larger than the alignment features and formed before the two layers are laminated together, effectively increasing allowable tolerances during lamination. This construction is particularly useful with leather, which is often subjected to cut-and-sew operations and used with a backing layer.

Abstract

Vehicle system information is communicated to a vehicle occupant by thermal haptics. A heat transfer device, such as a Peltier device, is used to locally control the temperature of an interaction area along an outer surface of a vehicle interior panel. A temperature differential between the interaction area and an adjacent area indicates the current status and/or the location of a control for the system. Multiple heat transfer devices can be used to provide a temperature gradient along the outer surface of the panel to provide the occupant with a thermally perceptible indicator of an available range of temperatures and/or a temperature setpoint for the vehicle system.

Abstract

A vehicle interior panel includes an engraved image at a decorative side of the panel. The image is produced by selectively removing a film layer from a compression molding to expose an underlying surface of a substrate layer in a desired pattern. The substrate layer is formed from a composite material including natural fibers. A laser beam is configured to remove the film layer and to cauterize the natural fibers along the pattern. The cauterization has an anti-aging effect on the natural fibers by increasing color stability and water resistance of the exposed composite material.

Abstract

An upholstery layer of a vehicle interior panel includes an airbag tear seam formed as a plurality of blind cuts arranged along a tear seam pattern. Each one of the blind cuts is formed by laser material removal at a plurality of locations along the pattern. Laser energy is delivered to the upholstery layer in a series of ultra-short pulses to form the blind cuts, which are formed in the upholstery layer while separate from a substrate of the panel. This technique is particularly useful with leather upholstery materials, in which non-visible airbag tear seams have been proven difficult to form.

Abstract

A vehicle interior panel includes an elastically compressible layer between a substrate and a decorative skin layer. The compressible layer has a non-uniform thickness along which voids are formed within the thickness of the panel. A center console can be equipped with the panel in the form of a tambour door that opens to access a storage space in the console and closes to serve as a cushioned armrest. The compressible layer can be formed from a foam material molded directly onto the decorative layer and shaped as a series of projections that are attached to flexibly interconnected crossmembers of the substrate. Thin portions of the compressible layer between the projections facilitate reversible bending of the panel during movement along curved guides.

Abstract

A vehicle interior panel includes a foam layer formed from a liquid foam precursor between a substrate and a visible decorative skin layer that has perforations formed therethrough. In some cases, the perforations are associated with a line of stitching sewn into and through the skin layer. A sealing film is located beneath the skin layer in the perforated region to prevent the liquid foam precursor from leaking through the perforations during foam formation. The sealing film extends beyond the perforated region and into a non-perforated region, in some cases extending substantially over the entire back side of the skin layer. In this manner, the edges of the sealing film do not cause visual blemishes on the visible surface of the decorative skin layer over time.

Abstract

A parts organizer receives small parts such as mechanical fasteners in bulk form and organizes a plurality of the parts in a common desired orientation. Unoriented parts are received on top of a parts holder and subsequently moved along an upper side of the parts holder by an agitator. A plurality of receptacles are formed in the parts holder and open on its upper side. Each receptacle is configured to hold one of the parts in the desired orientation and may include a lead-in feature to help reorient the parts as they encounter the receptacles during movement. A retaining wall operates to contain unheld parts at the upper side of the parts holder during a parts organizing step and to allow the agitator to clear unheld parts away from the upper side of the parts holder during a purge step.

Abstract

A vehicle interior panel can be constructed to include accent lighting in the form of an electroluminescent element that includes a thin multi-layer film disposed over a substrate. The multi-layer film is sufficiently thin to conform to the shape of the substrate surface over which it is disposed, making it possible to integrate accent lighting with the panel in a manner that gives the impression that the light is produced at the visible outer surface of the panel. The substrate plays a dual role, providing both the overall shape, contour, and structure for the panel while additionally functioning as one of the electrodes of the electroluminescent element. The substrate includes an electrically active material that is integrated into a plastic material either by blending an additive with the plastic material prior to molding the substrate, or by insert molding and embedding electrically conductive material into the plastic material.

Abstract

A vehicle interior panel includes a fabric layer with a sculpted feature in the visible decorative surface. The sculpted feature is formed in a cold-forming process, which can produce sharp features in the fabric layer similar to sharp features formed in polymer films by thermoforming. The cold-forming process includes pressing a flat sheet of decorative material that includes the fabric layer onto a curable adhesive before the adhesive cures. After curing, the adhesive holds the decorative sheet of material in a new three-dimensional shape, which can have features that are not attainable by traditional wrapping methods.

Abstract

A vehicle interior panel includes stitching sewn through a decorative skin layer of the panel. The associated sewing needle holes are sealed by an elastomeric material before a foam layer is formed on the non-visible side of the skin layer to prevent the expanding foam from leaking through the needle holes and becoming visible at the visible side of the panel. The elastomeric material is initially applied as a viscous liquid formulated to solidify and can be applied by spraying, enabling lines of stitching to be located along complex contours of the panel. A latex emulsion is one suitable type of viscous liquid.

Abstract

Interior panels having integrated airbag doors for motor vehicles are provided. In one example, an interior panel comprises a substrate having outer and inner surfaces and an opening extending therethrough. An airbag chute-door assembly is mounted to the substrate and comprises a chute wall that at least partially surrounds an interior space. The chute wall is configured for stowing an airbag module. The chute wall defines an expansion feature that facilitates moving sections of the chute wall for assembling the airbag module to the chute wall. A door flap portion is pivotally connected to the chute wall and at least partially covers the opening. A perimeter flange extends from the chute wall and has a flange section that overlies the outer surface of the substrate. A skin covering extends over the substrate and a foam is disposed between the skin covering and the substrate.

Abstract

A push-push latch arrangement includes, but is not limited to, a movable component adapted for mounting to a vehicle interior and configured to move between a first position and a second position. The arrangement further includes a latch component configured to engage the movable component and configured to move with respect to the movable component as the movable component moves between the first and second positions. The arrangement further includes a push-push pathway associated with either the movable component or the latch component. The push-push pathway has an ingress segment, a confining segment, and an egress segment. The arrangement further includes a pathway follower associated with either the movable component or the latch component. The pathway follower is engaged with the push-push pathway. The arrangement still further includes a damper engaged with the latch component and configured to retard movement of the latch component with respect to the movable component.

Abstract

Interior panels having integrated airbag doors for motor vehicles are provided. In one example, an interior panel comprises a substrate having an opening. A skin covering and foam cover the substrate. An airbag chute-door assembly is mounted to the substrate. The airbag chute-door assembly comprises a chute wall that at least partially surrounds an interior space. The chute wall is configured to direct passage of an airbag through the interior space towards the opening. A door flap portion is pivotally connected to the chute wall via a hinge section and at least partially covers the opening. A gusset hinge feature extends from the hinge section between and operatively coupled to the door flap portion and the chute wall. A perimeter flange extends from the chute wall away from the interior space and has a flange section that overlies the outer surface of the substrate.
