Abstract

A buried structure. The buried structure includes a pair of structural plates having corrugations extending transversely along a longitudinal direction of the buried structure, and a taper member configured to interconnect, via circumferential taper member edges, the pair of structural plates along respective circumferential structural plate edges. The taper member may have a taper member width progressively decreasing from a first longitudinal taper member edge to a second longitudinal taper member edge. The buried structure thereby configured to extend along the longitudinal direction in a non-linear path based on a separation distance between the adjacent circumferential structural plate edges of the respective structural plates corresponding to the progressively decreasing taper member width. The taper member may be substantially uncorrugated. The taper member may include a plurality of taper plates respectively sized to have taper plate widths progressively decreasing along the taper plate length.

Abstract

A sound wall and a method of constructing the sound wall. The sound wall includes a pair of laterally spaced posts, at least one of the pair of posts including: an elongate central member, a flange extending form the elongate central member in a direction substantially normal to the elongate central member, and a fin extending from the central member. The central member, the flange, and the fin may define a cavity for receiving elongate panels. The sound wall may include a plurality of elongate panels extending between the laterally spaced posts and stacked in an elongate direction of the elongate central member. End regions of the respective elongate panels may be retained between the flange and the fin. The sound wall may include an elongate stiffener member positioned within at least one of the plurality of elongate panels.

Abstract

Structural plates and methods of constructing arch-shaped structures using structural plates. Structural plates may include a combination of features including: an outer structural plate having adjacent circumferential apertures respectively spaced nominally greater than adjacent circumferential apertures of an inner structural plate; and the outer structural plate having nominally 5 enlarged or differently shaped circumferential apertures (as compared to circumferential apertures of the inner structural plate) such that the embodiment structural plates may be radiused to a variety of different radii while achieving desirable overlapping alignment of apertures along overlapping circumferential edges for receiving fasteners therein. Joiner plates may be provided for interconnecting structural plates along transverse edges in a non-overlapping arrangement, 10 thereby reducing the quantity of structural plate material that otherwise would be needed for a given circumferential length of the arch-shaped structure.

Abstract

A lateral support device for stabilizing an elongate foundation post installed in a substrate. The lateral support device may include at least one engagement member for engaging the elongate foundation post. The lateral support device may also include a support plate extending from the at least one engagement member. The support plate may have a plate width greater than a post width of the elongate foundation post. The support plate may be slidable relative to the foundation post in an elongate direction when the at least one engagement member engages at least a portion of the elongate foundation post. When the engagement member is in an engaged position, at least a portion of the support plate is below the grade of the substrate.

Abstract

A stiffener member for a hollow elongate panel. The hollow elongate panel may include a first end wall having a groove formation formed by a pair of inner walls and extending a length of the hollow elongate panel. The groove formation may extend into the hollow elongate panel. The stiffener member may include a bight member having opposing ends; a pair of arm members respectively extending from one of the opposing ends of the bight member to provide a substantially U-shaped configuration; and a flange member extending from each of the pair of arm members. The flange member may extend inwardly to abut one of the pair of inner walls of the groove formation when the stiffener member is received within the hollow elongate panel.

Abstract

An arch-shaped overhead structure comprises a curved metal archway with alternating crests and troughs, and reinforcement ribbing secured at spaced locations along the longitudinal length of the metal archway. The reinforcement ribbing comprises a number of longitudinally curved, roll-formed reinforcement ribs arranged in an end-to-end fashion, with each rib secured at least to a pair of crests and spanning at least one trough. Each rib comprises a pair of generally planar sidewalls, a generally planar top wall bridging the sidewalls and a generally planar lower flange extending from an opposite end of each sidewall. The sidewalls are inwardly angled in a direction towards the top wall, and each lower flange is secured to one of the pair of crests and has an under surface that is concave and has a shape complimentary to that one of the pair of crests. The reinforcement ribs allow the archway to carry higher loads.

Abstract

A method of controlling deformation of a cut end region (20) of an erected arch-type structure (10) for use in underpass construction and the like where the cut end region has at least one extended leg portion. The method comprises building progressively at least one layer of mechanically-stabilized earth adjacent the extended leg portion by alternately layering a plurality of compacted layers of fill (36) with interposed layers of reinforcement (38). Each layer of reinforcement is secured to the extended leg portion during the progressive building. The securement of the layers of reinforcement to the extended leg portions provide support in controlling deformation of the cut end region during backfilling and regular service.
