Abstract

The invention relates to a method for tracking a relevant body part of a viewer of an autostereoscopic screen, using a head tracking system that is integrated with the screen as well as a body tracking system that is remote from the screen. By tracking the head of a viewer simultaneously by both systems, it is possible to relate the position data of all other body parts obtained with the remote body tracking system to the position of the screen. In this way, the position of such body parts relative to the screen can be obtained, even when they are out of a field of view of the integrated head tracking system. In this way, a more accurate and therefore more realistic interaction of the viewer with displayed content can be achieved.

The invention relates to a method for cancelling distortion and displacement of a three-dimensional image perceived by a viewer of an autostereoscopic display device, wherein the cancelling is performed by taking into account 1) the refraction properties of the display device; 2) the position of each pixel in the display device; and 3) the viewing position of the eyes of the viewer. Abstract

The invention relates to a method for displaying stereoscopic content on an autostereoscopic display device comprising one or more autostereoscopic screens, wherein at least a part of these screens is observable by only one eye. In the method, it is determined which screen areas are out the field of view of the only one eye. The displaying of the stereoscopic content is then modified in such way that the pixels at the area that is out the field of view of the only one eye are instructed to provide the content for the other eye. This relieves the processor from the duty to constantly produce both left eye content and right eye content for the entire screen area. This has the advantage that processor capacity is saved, which may then be used for more important tasks such as achieving that the displayed stereoscopic image that is visible by both eyes is displayed in the desired quality. Another advantage is that crosstalk may be reduced by applying the method of the invention.

Abstract

The invention relates to a method for orienting stereoscopic content on an autostereoscopic display device, displayed to one or more viewers. In the method of the invention, at a certain moment during the displaying of the stereoscopic content, an instruction is received by the autostereoscopic display device to modify a displaying orientation of the content on the screen by a certain amount of rotation. When a standard content rotation would then performed for the autostereoscopic display device, in a way analogous to content rotation on a monoscopic display device, then a viewer will not experience a correct three-dimensional content. The invention solves this problem by taking account of the rotation already at the stage of weaving the stereoscopic content for the autostereoscopic display screen. An additional issue may arise when there is a rotation of the viewer relative to the autostereoscopic display device to such an extent that the viewer experiences an inverted depth. The invention provides a solution to this by swapping the images of a stereoscopic pair.

The invention relates to a method for controlling an autostereoscopic display device when a graphical pointer is to be used in or near a displayed virtual 3D- environment for selecting or manipulating a virtual element of the virtual 3D- environment. As the graphical pointer is observed by a viewer at another depth than the indicated element, it is not a priori evident which virtual element is exactly being indicated from the viewer's point of view (an effect of the phenomenon of motion parallax). The method of the present invention solves this problem by calculating what is exactly behind graphical pointer as viewed by the viewer, using the viewer's eye position and the perceived position of the graphical pointer in the real world. The method may then be followed by detecting a user action and, based on the viewer action, activating a function that is associated with the location at which the graphical pointer is pointing.

Abstract

The invention relates to a lenticular device comprising an array of elongate lenticular elements that are arranged parallel to one another, wherein an interference structure is present at an interface between two neighboring lenticular elements. The interference structure is capable of causing light that passes through the interference structure to extinct by destructive interference. Depending on the lens shape (convex or concave lenticular elements), the interference structure is present in a valley (in case of convex lenticular elements) or on a ridge (in case of concave lenticular elements). The interference structure solves the problem that the lens shape is imperfect in valleys and at ridges, as they are in practice not infinity sharp but a bit rounded. This gives rise to crosstalk when the lens is applied in an autostereoscopic display device. The interference structure solves this problem and reduces the crosstalk.

Abstract

The invention relates to an autostereoscopic display device configured to display stereoscopic images as a stereoscopic movie thereby taking into account position data of a viewer of the autostereoscopic display device, wherein the image capture rate and the display frame rate are matched by matching means, so that both frequencies have the same value. In this way, a relation between both frequencies is enforced that does not allow that one drifts away from the other over time. In addition, a phase difference between image capture cycles and image display cycles is adapted according to the invention. This allows to reduce the time between the moment where position data become available and the moment where the position data are actually used by an application for which the position data are intended. Abstract

The invention relates to a method for displaying a first content and a second content on an autostereoscopic display device, wherein the method comprises an improved procedure for determining the exact positions of sub-pixels in a pixel arrangement of the autostereoscopic display. Conventional ways of doing this work well for the most commonly used display panels wherein neighboring red, green and blue sub-pixels are regularly spaced with 1/3 of the pixel size in the direction of a row. Many new panels that have entered the market, have however sub-pixel arrangements that are less regular, which complicates the programming for the autostereoscopic display. The method of the present invention solves this problem by defining a group of pixels that forms a repeating unit (a stamp) in the sub-pixel arrangement and translating the sub-pixel positions in the repeating unit to all sub-pixel positions in the entire pixel arrangement. In this way, the invention moreover provides a general method for determining sub-pixel position in a pixel arrangement, no matter how the (sub-)pixels are arranged. In this way, software of an autostereoscopic display device can easily be adapted to panels with different pixel arrangements. This makes it easier to build a working autostereoscopic display device with a different panel.

Abstract

Abstract

The invention relates to a method for reducing disclinations in an autostereoscopic display device that is electrically switchable between a 2D view mode and a 3D view mode, wherein the method comprises varying the angle between two directions of liquid crystal alignment in the lenticular device, to thereby determine an angle that causes a minimal or an acceptable occurrence of disclinations after switching between both view modes. The invention further relates to an autostereoscopic display device that exhibits reduced disclinations when switching between both view modes.

Abstract

The invention relates to a 2D/3D switchable autostereoscopic display device which is optimized in that it exhibits reduced moire. This is performed by providing a nanorelief structure on a surface that is in contact with a liquid crystal switching medium. This results in scattering, which on its turn reduces moire. The amount of scattering can be influenced by varying an electric field that is applied to the liquid crystal medium. The invention relates to a method for tracking a facial characteristic of a viewer of an autostereoscopic display device, the method comprising obtaining first sequential data on the position of the facial characteristic relative to the autostereoscopic display device; and comprising second sequential data on the speed and/or acceleration of the facial characteristic relative to the autostereoscopic display device. The first sequential data are obtained at a first latency and the second sequential data are obtained at a second latency that is lower than the first latency. As a final step, sensor fusion is performed to combine the first sequential data and the second sequential data to generate final sequential data on the position of the facial characteristic relative to the autostereoscopic display device. In this way, the final sequential data are available at a final latency that is lower than the first latency. A viewer of an autostereoscopic display device can so be presented with an improved stereoscopic image and/or have an improved virtual reality experience, when he moves and rotates his head relative to the autostereoscopic display device.
