The invention relates to a production system (10; 10') for producing motor vehicle license plates (41), comprising a hot stamping machine (30) which is designed to continuously apply color onto stamped license plates (40) by means of a hot stamping process. At least one first conveyor means (12) is provided for transporting stamped license plates (40) through the hot stamping machine (30). According to the invention, the production system (10; 10') has at least one converter device (13) which has a buffer with means for temporarily storing at least two flat objects (40; 70), and the production system (10; 10') has a control unit (14) which is designed to actuate the buffer for successively depositing flat objects (40; 70) out of the buffer onto the first conveyor (12). By using such a buffer, stamped license plates (40) and/or templates (70) in particular can be deposited on the first conveyor. The invention further relates to a method for operating such a production system (10; 10').
