A lever arm is connected between the actuator and the carriage. The support arm is arranged such that movement of the carriage toward the head end of the lower support structure also produces a lifting moment on the upper body support section.
A mattress for use with an adjustable bed frame having a carriage, a head support section and a thigh support section connected to the carriage and a foot support section connected to the thigh support section includes a foam layer, a rigid planar retainer member fastened to an underside portion of the foam layer, a fabric layer arranged to cover the retainer member and a fastener connected to the retainer member for connecting the retainer member to the carriage. The mattress may include a plurality of channels formed in the foam layer and arranged to allow airflow through the foam layer. A fan may be mounted in the foam layer to force air through the channels. Loudspeaker system components may also be mounted in the channels.

An articulating bed incorporates a support frame with a head end, foot end and side frame members, a calTiage with wheels engaging the frame members to translate from a first position to a fully translated position. An upper body support, rotatably connected to the carriage, carries a mattress support. At least one telescoping rotation strut is attached at opposite ends through an axle attached to the frame members, and at a second end the upper body support. A first end of at least one fixed length rotation arm is carried by a rotating tube and a second end pivotally attaches to the upper body support. The rotating tube is mounted on wheels in a track and translates to contact a track end proximate the head end of the frame. The strut approaches vertical and transfers reaction forces from translation of the carriage to the rotation arm, whereupon the struts extend.
